After you finish reading the book later this month, if you want to, feel free to answer some of the discussion questions below:

Discussion Questions

1) Much of Pride and Prejudice centers on the question of marriage or other unions in their era of the late 1700's and early 1800's. Examine their attitude towards the institution of marriage and compare them to your modern attitudes toward marriage.

2) The social structure in Pride and Prejudice is between the middle class who made their money through trade and industry as opposed to the landed gentry who inherited their generations old-wealth? Compare your opinion towards the two classes.

3) What is your opinion on the difference in courtship in Georgian England (late 1700's to early 1800's) of Pride and Prejudice compared to the courtship of our modern era world of 2021 ?

4) Is it better to marry for love or marry for money? Why?

5) Talk about how the use of lies, silence and secrets used by Jane Austen in the story?

Richard Kenneth Conde | 310 comments Just a slight spoiler below, nothing to worry about:

Three chapters in and I feel the setting is a little similar to the setting of Romeo and Juliet in that the mother's primary concern is to wed one of her daughters to a wealthy man like Bingley.

Sorry to see Mr. Bennett thinks Mrs. Bennett is a nitwit of sorts. I suppose it doesn't matter what era, after a long marriage resulting in five daughters, I suppose the honeymoon era between them is long gone. Sad to see this even to this day in many marriages.

But Mr. Bennett is funny. He doesn't let anyone know that he's already had plans to meet Bingsley. You have to love the man's sarcastic humor. Too bad it stressed out Mrs. Bennett.

I liked how Elizabeth and Darcy's first encounter that they are like magnets opposing each other. You know, as children, usually when a small boy outright says out that a little girl is ugly, usually means he is attracted to her. Haha.

I think that having daughters not so far ago meant to worry about a good marriage. Only poor people marry for love, the rest is politics.
