Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 797 comments I may be an outlier on this one, because I didn’t care much for it. The writing is fine, but even in satire, I like to find a character or two with a few relatable qualities. Here, among lots of characters, I found none—in spite of the fact that I share some of the author’s opinions of Seattle and helicoptering parents. I never found myself rooting for anyone. I was amused by some of the episodes in the book, but I never came close to laughing out loud. (Hard to say why. I recently shouted with laughter at a few scenes in a Carl Hiaassen so it’s not that I don’t enjoy satire.) Anyway, I enjoyed Semple’s creative unrolling of the plot through emails and various documents in the first 2/3 or so of the book, but I was bored by the lengthy description in the end of how Bernadette managed her disappearing act. I read the first chapter of another of Semple’s books and I wasn’t at all tempted to continue. I suspect she’s just not the author for me. Rounded down to two stars.

It is interesting - and one of the reasons I enjoy the reviews on PBT so much!
