Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments My books read list for the first month of the year 2021 is hopefully a sign of a good reading year. I stumbled into a post pandemic, post apocalyptic, science fiction sort of theme and even veered towards horror (nonfiction horrors as well as fictional).
These first six books were outstanding
/**** Very Good books****/
Skyhunter by Marie Lu audio great narration made this one, somewhat predictable YA

Why Fish Don't Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life by Lulu Miller audio memoir, unusual and eye opening

Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America by Laila Lalami very very good, parts were very hard to read.

The Art of Violence: A Lydia Chin/Bill Smith Novel by S.J. Rozan audio and a favorite book in a favorite series

The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline second book I have read by this author, I will read more.

A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker audio and my favorite of the month, this will likely be a top book for my year

Nothing shabby about these next books 4 of 5 stars
/****Good Books****/
The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story by Julia Reed started in December, got a second chance library turn
The End of October by Lawrence Wright ok, this pandemiuc book is all too real
The Talented Miss Farwell by Emily Gray Tedrowe group read book
Thin Ice by Paige Shelton new series new to me author
The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher audio I thought it was fantasy, it turned out to be horror, luckily with some lighter dialogue

A couple of free Kindle books and a .5 entry combining characters from two cozy series
/****Short Novellas****/
A Haunting is Brewing by Juliet Blackwell
The Prince and the Troll by Rainbow Rowell this one was subtle, read it twice to get it, I love the author so wanted to find the depth I knew must be there.
Hazel and Gray by Nic Stone author of Dear Martin which is very good.

Kari | 149 comments Wow, there are so many books on your list that I want to read! I'm planning to read A Song for a New Day soon, but have been putting it off because it hit a little close to home with the quarantining-like plot, but your review convinces me I need to give it a go sooner rather than later.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments Melodie and Kari: I hope you both like A Song for a New Day.
I found myself with several pandemic, post apocalyptic, virus, etc., themed books in January. I guess they are hard to avoid. It is strange; after so many months, in some ways reading about people coping with related issues starts feeling familiar if not normal. (Definitely not normal)
