What's your mother tongue?
Tell us here!

message 2: by Era ➴ (new)

Era ➴ (readeroflibraries) I don't have one! I'm bilingual, so I learned Indonesian and English at the same time growing up (both my parents are from Indonesia but I was born in America). I can't read/write Indonesian, though, just very basic sentences that I have to guess at.

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna My mother tongues are Russian and Ukrainian. My family always spoke Russian at home and Ukrainian everywhere else.

Ayla (storiesandfolklore) I, sadly, only speak English. Both my parents are bilingual and grew up with their native languages as well as English. I'm learning Spanish but I'm not quite to the level where I can say I'm bilingual, lmao.

me too! I grew up learning English, but I've been taking an official Spanish class at my school for 3 years. I'm also trying to learn Korean, but I'm mainly focusing on Spanish.

Lukutar ☘ (lukutarbooks) | 19 comments Finnish is my mother tongue! Though Swedish is our second national language :) Though I understand it better than I speak or write it. English is more familiar and we start learning it earlier in school than Swedish.

I have also been learning Japanese for 2 years now.

Fabitha (fabitha89) | 575 comments My mother tongue is Italian, and I also understand (but I don't speak nor read) Friulano, which is the official ladin language of my small region. It has very few speakers, but we are trying to preserve it!
Also I speak and read fluently in English but I don't know if I'd consider myself bilingual. I'd say well-versed is all ;)

It was easy for me since I was born in Port Blair and lived there for 5 years, where Hindi speakers are more. A significant number of Bengalis and Tamilians too live there. Also I learnt it at school.

I reckon you can learn Hindi in 6 months, provided you are dedicated and focused on the task at hand. It will be difficult to learn if you are starting from scratch.

Yes, it is a beautiful language and fun to learn! I was learning it using English, but knowing Arabic helped me to learn it better, because our verbs also change depending on the gender, if it was plural..etc

message 45: by Shera (Book Whispers) (last edited Apr 04, 2021 09:24PM) (new)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Wow, my native language is English. I'm so jealous of everyone else.

@Rushali I took French in High School and loved the language. I've been told it's easier to learn if your native tongue isn't English, but I hear that about learning other languages in general. Sadly most of my French has left my brain since I never used it. I dated a French guy. My French was poor and his English was much better, so we kind of met int he middle! >_< I still know how to say I love cheese and poor me some more wine!

I know phrases and bits of Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean. Mainly from watching TV in those languages. I got decent enough with Mandarin that I actually helped a Chinese college professor with our local bus route. I don't think today I could do it and I'm sad that I'm not good with Mandarin anymore.

Khushi | 24 comments I can speak English, Hindi and Punjabi. Hindi is my mother tongue. I took a year of French classes, so I know a little bit of that, and I understand Haryanvi, although I can't speak it.
Also, @Gouri, Hindi is not the national language of India. It's just an official language, although one that is spoken in a lot of regions. India does not have a national language.
