I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but I really found that Mike's increasingly apocalyptic check-ins with his boss/buddy Reggie became just hilarious.

It culminated in a call that I remember like this (about a week after reading):

Mike: So thanks for sending those marines.
Reggie: Yeah, had to call in a few favors.
Mike: So, yeah, they're all dead. And most of the scientists are dead, and this gigantic project is kaput.
Reggie: Ugh. I wish I wasn't me right now.
Mike: Good news, you aren't you. Or, you aren't this Earth's you, so that's nice, right? Silver linings!

Anyway, juxtaposing the bad/gigantic news that Mike delivers with Reggie mustering little more than rubbing his temples as a reaction seemed funny.

You definitely got the spirit if not the exactitude.
