As I drove into work this morning—listening to “The Hate U Give”—I cannot help but to feel all sorts of emotions and think about the various concepts brought up in the book thus far I am finishing chapter 5). Notions of tokenization, authenticity, code-switching, trauma, race-relations (us vs. them), policing/police brutality, differences in social and cultural environments, socioeconomic status, and more. I also connected with Star on pop culture references such as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and 90s Hip-Hop and R&B. The book, so far, is capturing a ‘hidden’ and ‘invisible’ voice; one that I resonate with, especially during my early undergraduate days.
