It is a retelling in a fantasy setting- You'll need to provide a reference that establishes the date.

Is it acceptable?
I have a goal of reading all the Newberry Award winners. Would The Midwife's Apprentice work for this, or no because of the MPG of Childrens?

OK, I found the answer to this - it meets the MG and the BL, but not the AR points.

It does not look like it works.
From The Actor and the Earl - "in the four years....win a part in The Comedy of Errors
The Comedy of Errors was written in 1594-95. And it references Much Ado About Nothing written in 1599.
There's nothing linking the book's performances to the premieres from what I can see. This looks like the book was set after 1600. If you can find a specific reference that might change things.

Thanks. It was worth a shot since the book never firmly establishes time anywhere. At least not in a simple here's your date sort of way. Had to read it for another challenge and then thought, ooooh maybe. :)

The time period is medieval but, as King Arthur probably never existed I want to check that it won't be disallowed if I post it. The time period for King Arthur (real or not) is somewhere around the 5th or 6th century.

yes, it works
Historically, this exterior frame is set in nineteenth century England. The bulk of the novel, however, takes place in the historic Camelot of the sixth century

which is a play and at the beginning it simply states that it is set in medieval Japan...but no date. Will that work?

You will need to find something to support the time period. The samurai era in Japan was about 1185-1868.

March 31 is Hug a Medievalist Day- a day to celebrate Medieval Studies. Read a book set during or about medieval times. For the purposes of this task, medieval times will be defined as the 5th through the 16th century (400 AD–1600 AD). Books with parallel timelines work as long as at least 50% of the book is set during the medieval period. Nonfiction works.
Some suggestions may be found here: Historical Novels - Medieval
Required: If the time setting is not evident on the book's main page include a reference.
