It was a short book with a reminder n perspective and having a goal or purpose.
The story definitely makes one think about family dynamics. I was surprised that only after Gregor woke as a cockroach and the family HAD to actually provide for themselves, did they.
So the story really showcases how everyone in the family changes. Gregor was just the catalyst for their metamorphosis.
The father decides to once again provide for his family, no longer able to depend upon Gregor as the sole provider. The mother had to endure the heartbreak of loosing her only son, who was seen as the man of the house, the one with a lucrative future ahead of him. I think the sister had the biggest transformation. At first she was just a young girl who idolized her brother, and relied upon him for her future, although she wasn't aware of Gregor's intention to send her off to school for music. Her world like the rest of the family's revolved around Gregor the provider (as he provided for all their needs: a roof over their heads, food and clothing etc.). At first she came across innocent and loving. As she grew up, and saw the harsh reality of her brother's impending doom, she understood the grim reality. Although a bit maliciously and decided to be logical about his predicament. Was it Gregor's fault he became a cockroach, and thus now depended upon the family. He was shunned and wasted away in his room, while the family became more intolerant of him and began to despise his existence. In the end the sister went from being a just a girl to being an adult.
By the end of the story the whole family seemed to have found more purpose in their lives. Now that they had to be productive, and less reliant. Well, everyone that is except for Gregor. LOL
