Evie Thomas doesn't believe in love anymore. Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began . . . and how it will end. After all, even the greatest love stories end with a broken heart, eventually.

As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. His philosophy is to say yes to everything--including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he's only just met.

Falling for X is definitely not what Evie had in mind. If her visions of heartbreak have taught her anything, it's that no one escapes love unscathed. But as she and X dance around and toward each other, Evie is forced to question all she thought she knew about life and love. In the end, is love worth the risk?

Not to mention why the hell did she not tell her sister the truth, I think it's messed up to leave her in the dark, convinced their dad can do no wrong! IT's so messed up he's off living his HEA while their mom is just learning to trust in love again! Hope Shirley knows once a cheater-always a cheater!

I don't know if I loved this one. Until the end it was so good and that bittersweet end just makes me want to cry. I'm glad she went back with X to spend the remainder of his time on Earth with him but hot damn that's devastating knowing it's coming. Really I don't get how the visions were supposed to be a gift. No matter what seeing the end of a great love no matter how great is still an end and like knowing when you're going to die, will hardly let the heroine live on and have hope. I agree with all of this so much. (view spoiler)[ I didn't want her to go to the wedding, like everything is okay even though he destroyed her view of love and trust in him. And the younger sister thinking he has no blame in the divorce is shitty.

X still dying was completely tragic and I was really hoping the visions would be something that could be changed. The fact that they weren't and all those breakups and his death still happened made it feel pointless (hide spoiler)]

I couldn’t agree more. (view spoiler)[I thought the irony was a bit funny as well. At one point when hanging out with her friends ones of them I think X mentions not wanting to know when he’d die. Well umm it’s just as bad knowing when, how and all the details of how the love of your life will die. Not to mention I mean if she knows he has a mysterious heart issue, I’d be urging him for a stress test, EKG, the works. That old lady telling her this was a gift is a slap in the face. And I won’t even mention her father, he’s garbage and doesn’t deserve either of his children and certainly not love..... (hide spoiler)]

Just started!!! I thought I would try a chapter to get a feel for the book, and the chapters are short and I couldn't stop with just one! :)

I know this sounds weird, but I never read the full blurb about books before I read them. I don't skip to the last part of the book to even see how many pages there are just in case I accidentally spoil something. So I had no idea (view spoiler)[ this book had hints of magical realism in it, which I normally don't like, (hide spoiler)] but I LOVE this author, and so far, I'm really enjoying this one!

Chapter 7- (view spoiler)[ I'm really intrigued by all of this, and I'm sad Shelley and Sheldon will end up braking up (maybe Evie will try to get them to stay together?) even though they aren't the main characters. Sheldon riding the Ferris wheel by himself broke my heart a bit... (hide spoiler)]

Read ch1-6. Totally agree, Katie, short chapters and it has me quite intrigued. Who’s the mystery book lady? What message is trying to be taught?

Up to ch32. Liking the dynamic between these two, and how they accept each other as they are.

I was surprised as this seemed to have more of a focus on (view spoiler)[ magical realism hinted at. It felt a little like it petered out. (hide spoiler)]

I wrote a few notes for this book because I didn’t get to join on the buddy read early so I just thought i’d write in my notebook and also I want to say I read this in June not July so I’m hoping this one counts for a June buddy read lol

at first I didn’t like the visions especially that she gets to see break up and not just the high of the relationship.
I kind of really liked her character at the same time I thought like her parents didn’t do a good job like I think her character was at her own development and not her parents’ contribution obviously they’re not doing a good job (in my opinion) but her mom I feel bad for her but at the same time I don’t know…
part of me really enjoyed the romance and another didn’t (got the vibe of instalove for some reason) but not for the reason that most readers are annoyed by it a few of my friends were saying like if she didn’t know the ending she would’ve just went on with the relationship and didn’t go through the thing that break up through texts and stuff but I disagree I like the fact that she got the visions because this girl doesn’t believe in love so if she’s met X without seeing the vision she would have moved on with her life but she started a relationship with him, and after she saw the vision I mean she did end up deciding to go back to him so thats awesome.
My friend said stuff like why are they focusing on the now I mean in the end she gonna be all alone but I thought it was actually a selfless act like when you know that they are leaving soon and youre out here trying to give them the time of their life being in love is such an amazing feeling so why would you take that away from them when you can be the reason they have it
To me love means the impact that it leaves on us and not how long it lasts some people’s true love isn’t the one theyre with right now but it’s just the remnants of a specific person..

(view spoiler)[ Let me start by saying, I have very high expectations for this book cause I just loved her 2 previous books. But it just feels quite plain so far. Not that I don't like plain meet cute romances, it's just, there usually is a bigger subject matter in Celeste's Ng books and I'm missing it here. The writing is spot on as usual, but the story is a biiiiiiit too cheesy. I doubt anyone just goes to a dance lesson alone and finds a male dance partner whom they will eventually marry or smt I guess. I just wanted a bit more depth. I'm really liking the characters thoughhh (hide spoiler)]

I read this in October and really liked it. The ending threw me. I still think The Sun Is Also A Star is my favorite Yoon book!
