Edgar While reading a short story of Kawabata, I came across a note on the Ainu, the original inhabitants of Japan.

I wonder if there are any recommended books on the life and history of the Ainu, preferably in form of historic fiction or novel, that explain more about the present and the past of these people.

You might try Our Land Was a Forest: An Ainu Memoir and/or Harukor: An Ainu Woman's Tale, both memoirs, not historical fiction.

I read The Romance of the Bear God: Ainu Folktales a few years ago, by the same author of Our Land Was a Forest: An Ainu Memoir.
