Safari Adventure in Botswana

Day 6: Chobe National Park

The Chobe River is a tributary of the Zambezi River and marks the border between Botswana and Namibia. Chobe National Park was founded on its banks in 1967, and is the best known park in Botswana and one of the most popular in all of Africa thanks to the richness of its fauna. Since 2011, it has been part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (known as KAZA) which includes several parks located in five neighboring countries: Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the so-called "parks of peace", where political borders between states are abolished and animals can freely migrate from one park to another. They owe their name to the fact that, in addition to favoring the development of tourism, they hope to promote peace between neighboring nations. Though you will still find controls similar to customs at the borders of the parks.
* Read a book set in a national park (tell us where) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KAVANGO-ZAMBEZI TRANSFRONTIER CONSERVATION AREA (five word minimum).

The animal symbol of the Chobe NP is undoubtedly the elephant. There are various ways of describing the animal, some of which refer to his alleged clumsiness. But know that, if you camp here or in the other protected areas in the northern part of the country, the animals you will hear feasting on the trees or bushes next to your tents will almost certainly be elephants. I have always wondered how they manage to avoid the tents, when during the day they seem to lose interest in what is around them and tend to overwhelm the bushes along their path. Despite what I just said, you have to know that they can still attack humans if they feel threatened.
* Read a book that mentions an elephant (share text) OR read a book with a clumsy character in it (tell us who).
Day 7: Chobe National Park

The purpose of any safari in southern Africa is to spot the so-called Big Five, that is, the five symbolic animals of the savannah: elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard. While you won't have a problem with the three herbivores, it will be much harder to find and get close to lions and leopards. In my trip to Botswana I did not see any leopards while with my group though later in the trip we were able to witness two lions feasting on the last day in the Okavango Delta.
* Read a series #5 book OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in BIG FIVE (ignore A, An or The).

On my first day of safari in Botswana, here in Chobe National Park, I saw a pair of cheetahs very closely, most likely two young brothers. I must confess that I fell in love with these felines. I also saw a giraffe walking along the road that leads to the park entrance. This helps you understand how easy it is to spot animals in this country. You will see herbivores in large numbers, but I must confess that some, such as zebras and impalas, have never bored me. We are certainly lucky to have digital cameras because I assure you that you will take thousands of photos!
* Read a book with a feline on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a photographer in the text (share text).
Day 8: Moremi Game Reserve (Okavango Delta)

Between Chobe NP and the Okavango Delta lies the Moremi Game Reserve, which covers much of the eastern side of the delta. Established in 1963, it owes its name to a local indigenous chief and is the only protected area in the delta. The reserve is just under 5,000 km2, but is rich in fauna and flora. The best season to observe the animals is between July and October, but keep in mind that there will be a strong temperature range between day and night: one night I had 3° C (37° F) in my tent, while in the hottest hours of the day you can wear a T-shirt (but on the open jeeps used for safaris
it is better to have a sweater or jacket handy because when they go fast it gets cold).
* Read a book with at least 5,000 ratings on its GR homepage OR read a book set in a very cold or very hot climate (tell us which of the two).

There are four campsites within this reserve, one of which is regularly visited by a herd of hyenas at night. These animals are considered scavengers, but in reality they are hunters and there are known cases in which they have attacked men - one case being in one of these campsites. I have stayed there and confess that being awakened by a hyena sniffing you and thinking that there is only a piece of canvas between it and your head is terrifying! The herd of hyenas have not stopped there for more than twenty minutes, I think, but it was the moment in my life when I was most afraid.
* Read a book tagged THRILLER or HORROR on its GR homepage OR read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in HYENA.
Day 9: Moremi Game Reserve (Okavango Delta)

The Okavango Delta was born in Angola, where it is called Cubango, and then reaches Botswana where it creates an immense delta in the Kalahari desert, without ever reaching the ocean. An alluvial plain is formed with a whole series of canals, lagoons and islands, which are home to a very rich flora and fauna, as well as human settlements belonging to five different ethnic groups. As we have already said, only part of the delta is protected, but you will not be disappointed during your stay!
* Read a book written by an author who has more than one pen name (tell us what they are) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in MOREMI GAME RESERVE.

The typical excursion in the delta is a trip on a mokoro, a canoe made from a log, though today the wood is often replaced by fiberglass for environmental reasons (the two trees traditionally used for the mokoro take almost a century to grow). It is a fairly expensive excursion, so consider choosing a more modern boat. My group, due to the number of participants, chose the latter option and did not regret it. Seeing the delta from the water offers another point of view and normally allows you to observe more birds than normal jeep safaris.
* Read a book in which the MC does something on a whim or something he/she wouldn't normally do (tell us briefly what) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in MOKORO (ignore A, An or The).
Day 10: Maun

After days spent in the wilderness, arriving in Maun can be almost a shock. But you will appreciate the return to civilization guaranteed by hot showers, a good bed and meals not cooked over a campfire. If, on the other hand, this is the first city you set foot on in Botswana, you will find many agencies that organize safaris. What is still considered a village is full of hotels, restaurants and shopping centers.
* Read a book where the MC goes shopping OR read a book whose MC's name begins with a letter in MAUN.

Maun's real attraction is ... its airport! In fact, it is from here that the panoramic flights over the Okavango Delta depart. They are carried out in small planes or helicopter, and must be booked well in advance. The ride may be a little bumpy, but the view from above over the savannah and the delta is truly breathtaking. It's not difficult to spot animals like this, so keep your camera close at hand!
* Read a book where an airport is mentioned (share the text) OR read a book that had a bumpy start but got better.

3 Months from Start
I was lucky enough to be able to do a safari in Botswana and below you will find many of my impressions, with the caveat that my journey was different from the one I prepared for this challenge. Patrizia
Botswana is called the Switzerland of Africa for its peaceful character. Unlike most of the other South Saharan states, it has not known dictatorships or revolts, and for decades the President of the Republic has always been the same. But the real attraction of the nation is its natural landscape, which makes it the ideal destination for a safari.
Choose a level:
Daytripper: Complete one task per day for a total of 10 tasks.
Explorer: Complete 15 of the 20 tasks. You must complete at least one task per day.
Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.
*Please note: the challenge was translated using Google translate.
*******************************************************************
Day 1: Gaborone
The capital of Botswana is located on the border with South Africa and it is very likely that you will fly into and land here. In anticipation of your stay in the country you can visit the National Museum, which offers insights into the history and environment of the country. The Gaborone Game Reserve is home to a variety of local wildlife, but be aware that you will see plenty of them on your safari.
* Complete one of the tasks in our Gaborone Capital challenge found HERE. (tell us the task).
Take advantage of the stop in Gaborone to make the last purchases in anticipation of your safari, taking into account that the major agencies that organize them are based in the small village of Maun. It is possible to stay in luxury campsites or lodges, but in the various parks there are much more basic campsites, immersed in wild nature. Whatever your type of accommodation during the safari, it is absolutely forbidden to leave tents or lodges once you have retired for the night because wild animals walk freely throughout the territory.
* Read a book with an outdoors theme OR read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in SAFARI.
Day 2: Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari is the sixth largest desert in the world and is mostly found in Botswana, though part of it is also found in Namibia and South Africa. It is a red sand desert with large areas of steppe or grasslands. Among the existing protected areas we should mention the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, born in 2000 from the union of the Gemsbok National Park (Botswana) with that of Kalahari Gemsbok (South Africa). Here you will find the great African predators thanks to the presence of large herds of various species of antelopes. It is also possible to spot several species of birds, including ostriches.
* Read a series #6 book OR read a book with a bird on the cover (post cover).
Another protected area is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Founded in 1961, it is the second largest in the world. The terrain here is often undulating and covered with bushes and sometimes trees, so that it accommodates many different types of animals: giraffes, hyenas, zebras, warthogs, cheetahs, lions, leopards, impalas, wildebeests, etc. The most representative animal of the Kalahari is perhaps the oryx, an antelope recognizable by its large horns.
* Read a book with 1, 6 or 9 in its total page count (share page count) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE (three word minimum).
Day 3: Kalahari Desert
In the Kalahari live the San or Bushmen, a people of hunter-gatherers. Since 2002 they have been struggling to avoid being driven out of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which they consider to be the land of their ancestors. They are among the oldest inhabitants of Africa having been there for about 20,000 years. Though remains have been found dating back 100,000 years, that are compatible with the San. A curiosity: the Bushmen find themselves in some novels by Wilbur Smith, perhaps the most important contemporary African author, certainly the best known worldwide.
* Read a book with an indigenous character (tell us who) OR read a book written by Wilbur Smith.
According to the San, at night "you hear the stars sing" and they are not wrong. Wherever you are camping at night, when you look up at the sky, you will be amazed by the amount of stars that dot the sky, especially if like me, you live in a city and the stars have practically disappeared from its night sky. One of the best memories of my trip to Botswana is when I saw the Milky Way for the first time.
* Read a book with a night sky on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in MILKY WAY (ignore A, An or The).
Day 4: Makgadikgadi Pans & Kubu Island
In the north-eastern part of the country are the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest salt marsh complex in the world. Deserted for part of the year, they are repopulated by wildebeest, zebras and antelopes, as well as various species of birds, after the heavy rains between November and December, transforming the marsh into a green expanse. To explore them, especially in the dry season, you must rely on an expert guide because the risk of getting lost is high. Part of this area is protected by the two parks that have been established here: the Nxai Pan in 1971 and the Makgadikgadi Pans in 1992.
* Read a book set in November or December OR read a book originally published between 1971 and 1992 (tell us the year).
In the middle of one of these immense salt pans, rises a kind of islet covered with baobab trees: Kubu Island. Even though it is a national monument, it is possible to camp at its base and many tourists go there to watch the sunrise and sunset. The unusual surroundings make you feel like you are on another planet. Baobabs are characterized by the huge trunk in which they store water, but few people know that its fruits and leaves are edible. The fruit, if sucked fresh, tastes vaguely of lemon (I tried it, trust me).
* Read a book set on an island OR read a book with a tree on the cover (post cover).
Day 5: Kasane & Excursion to Victoria Falls
Kasane is a village located a few kilometers from the border with Zimbabwe. Its main attraction are the cruises they offer along the Chobe River. Having done it personally (twice!), I highly recommend the afternoon cruise. You will see a myriad of animals,
but, above all, on your return you can enjoy a sunset over the river that will leave you speechless! As for the animals, the star is certainly the hippopotamus, but with a little luck you will see a majestic fish eagle perched on a tree. Beware of the hippopotamus, if you should come across one while walking, they are very dangerous and tend to attack if, inadvertently, a person stands between them and the water.
* Read a book with a cruise or travel by boat in it OR read a book where all the letters of the word HIPPO are found in the title (in any order).
Given their proximity (it takes less than a couple of hours by car), I recommend that
you take an excursion to the impressive Victoria Falls. Located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, along the Zambezi River, they are a real sight in any season, although the flow of water can vary greatly. My advice is to visit both sides; although
the best view is from the Zimbabwe side. From the Zambian side, you will feel like you can reach out and touch the falls (and you will get wet). If, like me, you are lucky enough to visit when there is a full moon, you will be able to see the rare, but amazing lunar rainbow (the image posted above does not do its magic well).
* Read a book where a famous river or fall is mentioned (share text) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in VICTORIA FALLS.
