Orphans Alina and Mal have grown up together and now both serve in the king's army. Mal is the best tracker, but Alina has never amounted to much as a cartographer. But one day the army has to cross the Shadow Fold, the patch of darkness that divides the land of Ravka in two and where winged predators lurk. When their lives are threatened, a dormant power in Alina is awakened that saves the remaining survivors. Alina is whisked away by the Darkling, the king's warlord, and taken to the palace to be trained as a grisha or magic user, told that she is destined to be the savior that saves the land. But things are not what they seem.

A great beginning to an intriguing series in a fascinating world. I picked this up because I saw the trailer for the Netflix TV show based on this book and it looked good. I'm definitely continuing the series.
