Oliver Rogers | 3 comments Bathsheba for sure - easily such a strong independent woman to run that farm on her own. I always found Eustacia Vye an interesting and slightly manipulative character, I think she would be interesting to explore with her dreams of Paris and her desire to be loved. Definitely not Tess as she gets bashed along by events, apart from the 5 days of bliss spent squatting in that big house with Angel.

Ann Bathsheba is a great character, lively, smart, impetuous, and likable. She’d do well in a contemporary setting for sure.
Grace Melbury, in The Woodlanders, would definitely benefit from a contemporary setting; she’d be able to get that divorce from that louse Fitzpiers lickety-split.

I was thinking about this question in relation to Tess Durbeyfield. Can we imagine her in a contemporary setting, or is she a product of her time?
