Annie (alyzzp) | 148 comments She's not transphobic for liking the tweet of a transphobic person. That's just an over assumption. She's not transphobic for not liking the phrase "people who menstruate". That's a personal preference. She's not transphobic for believing in unchangeable biological sex. That's literally science.

She is transphobic, and a little uneducated, for believing transgenderism to be a trend, when it is actually possible a solution to gender dysphoria--some people outgrow it, some people need to transition.

I love her books but I don't agree with her views at all

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

It's just wrong

message 4: by Maple (new)

Maple (bookish_maple) I agree. Harry Potter is an awesome series but J.K. Rowling is not an awesome person.

Yeah I agree with all of you. You keep that sort of stuff to yourself, not broadcast it online for the world to see

I agree - it's so disappointing to see that someone who has so much influence is using there platform for bad :((

message 8: by Sophie (new)

Sophie I agree, people who have such a wide audience really need to be responsible with the influence they hold.

Yes!!

The way I look at Harry Potter now is that JK Rowling is the author... but the world of HP has moved beyond her. I will always love the books and anything HP really... but the fans have taken it into their own hands by changing and expanding HP to something past Rowling could have done... fanfic and fanart and just how we view ourselves fitting in at Hogwarts no matter who we are... and I think that's more to the point of the story than how Rowling represents herself today... sooooo, this is just my opinion seriously, but she has been expelled from Hogwarts so... I'm not that concerned

Amrita | 103 comments J.K Rowlings views on things are not going to come between me and my love for HP. I honestly don't much with her. I mean HP books are inspirations... but she isn't...

I agree with Sophie....

At first I couldn't even imagine that someone who wrote HP could say something like that.... But now that's the harsh truth. Honestly before she tweeted these things, I truly admired her. But now I am not so sure

message 12: by Jayna (new)

Jayna | 82 comments i mean... after i realized she was a transphobe i started to realize how bad the books are.
there's literally like 5 POC and they are super degraded and not even really part of the story... and it's incredibly sexist if you take a look-- and there are a TON of problematic themes that everyone disregards

And at the risk of sounding ignorant I wanna ask something.

What exactly did JKR tweet? All this stuff happened during a very important exam of mine so I was super busy.
And now that I search on internet, it's people's opinions about her tweet, which feels biased.

Can I get some accurate, unbiased source?

Jayna | 82 comments Here's an article on some of the problematic themes in Harry Potter. https://www.google.com/amp/s/screenra...

Another thing too is the fact that the Slytherin house is entirely based on "racism" against muggle borns, and that's not even addressed throughout the series.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Ananya and Jayna..😊

Read it. Agree with almost all but talking about racism not being addressed.. didn't the entire war happen because some people didn't believe in Pureblood supremacy and decided that Voldy and co. are evil and need to be fought against.
Let me know if I misunderstood your point.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

And also about POC rep (it's been 2 years so maybe I don't remember so well) but JKR never mentioned the race of ANY character.

Hence leading to the infamous 'Is Hermione black or white' fandom query.

Ananya, this one is an hour and half long 👀 so I'm watching the next video.
Will it suffice?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Mary wrote: "This is the main reason why people say Hermione wasn’t Black, because JK was always explicitly said when someone was Black.

Ok. It's been long so I don't remember little details clearly

message 23: by ananya ྀི (new)

ananya ྀི (literary_f4iry) | 8 comments Anshika yes the other video talks about the situation in depth too! you can watch that

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Out of context but l'll never get over the way Padma and Parvati were dressed up in GoF movies (the book did justice to the dress)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I mean, just look at this

message 26: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 20, 2021 08:43AM) (new)

EWWWW... lehengas are vibrant & beautiful and anything but that...
And books said they wore GOLD bangles not these 'things' I used to dress up my doll😏
the colour combination is ugly

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Now I know enough about the topic and my conclusion:
1. JKR is indeed transphobe.
2. She's also a master manipulator and knows her way with words. Look at the TERF War essay.
3. Trans women are women.
Trans men are men.
4. It's not Trans people's fault if a man is a predator, is 'feigning' to be trans or even if a trans person is predator that doesn't mean the entire community is predator. Similar to 'not all men'.
5. Transition is NOT an 'allure' or a 'trend'.
6. I thought JKR would be wise and intelligent.

And thanks to everyone for their help in enlightening me.

message 29: by Jayna (new)

Jayna | 82 comments yeah so with the racism not being addressed, i don't quite remember exactly but I'm pretty sure that was never explicitly stated.
a huge example of this is slughorn, who makes some borderline racist comments but is still on the "good" side and (at least in the books) never gets held accountable for them, other than a tiny "oh muggle borns can be smart too!"
it's also quite sad that a ton of people consider themselves Slytherin (apparently even Merlin was a Slytherin) when the entire foundings of it was racism.

it's also worth noting the disdain and patronizing attitude towards muggles that's expressed a lot throughout the books (think: Arthur weasley, the way the *only muggles*, the dursleys, are portrayed) the implication of which is that in order to be worthy of respect is to have magic in you, which is something that we cannot control.

message 30: by Maple (new)

Maple (bookish_maple) @Anshika, I agree!
👍

I understand.
But the thing with people associating themselves to Slytherin..
I'm a SlytherClaw. For me and other Slytherins it means ambitious, clever, self- preservation, determination.
For 2 years I feigned myself as a Gryffindor.
I know it ain't that deep but I was scared to be called Slytherin when I was 14.. Don't associat real life Slytherins with racism, please. Who will we be racist to btw? Muggles & Muggleborns, who aren't even real?

message 32: by Jayna (new)

Jayna | 82 comments no i wasn't at all trying to say that just because you're a Slytherin you are somehow racist. I'm sorry it came out that way. I was trying to say that i wish the Slytherins in Harry Potter at least somewhat embodied the qualities that you were saying and that the entire house *in the books and movies* had to be shadowed by those horrible foundings.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

EXACTLY! MY COMPLAIN EXACTLY...

WHERE ARE MY GOOD SLYTHERINS I COULD LOOK UP TO..?

And it's ok😊

message 34: by Maple (new)

Maple (bookish_maple) Yes! I agree!!
