I prefer buying the book, when I can!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I prefer to borrow the book, and if I really like it enough to re-read it more then once or twice, then I would buy it.

If I could I probably would borrow more, but as of right now, I can only buy my books, which I'm okay with.

iminyourwallllls | 4 comments I prefer to buy books, but I sell a decent amount of them back to a used book store for store credit (and then get more books, then the process repeats). So it's kinda a little of both

That sounds so cool! There's a small semi–local bookstore near to where I live, but I don't know if they do that.

I don't typically sell my books, but if I did, I probably would use Thrift Books.

Hmm, I've never heard of that.

Is it local, or is it more nationwide? Or is it online?

iminyourwallllls | 4 comments It's local

Only to people I know and trust.

If it's returned damaged, I'll either make them pay for a new copy or just never lend to them again.

Ultimately, though, it depends on the person, if I lend it or not.

Normally I will borrow books from close friends and then we exchange lol

but I also love to buy books because I really like my own books. But I also go to this book group and we get our books and keep them

@Ash, it's the only/main way to make them care about the books

Sure! Hopefully, it works for you!

message 17: by BiBookDemon (new)

BiBookDemon I prefer to borrow the book, just because I see no point in owning it forever (no offense). I tend to look at it from a logical(for me) angle. Do I have enough money to buy books all the time? No. If I do, am I even going to use them regularly? No. My money I use for my Losi rc car (His name is Havoc and he always needs to be fixed up) and chocolate. And coffee. I'm also saving up my money for some other stuff.... And, the truth is that I don't usually read a book twice. If I've waited long enough, then yes, maybe I will. Anyway, my point is that for me 1. I feel that it's pointless when I can borrow books for free and 2. I just don't have the money for it.

That makes total sense! (No offense taken! :) )

I pretty much buy because I can't borrow (yet, hopefully!).

lol, it's okay! :)

Me too! While there are certain perks to borrowing, I do like to open my own copy of a book.

message 22: by Emary (new)

Emary I usually just borrow from the library (unless the library doesn’t have it) because I never really reread books. Now thinking about it, I probably should reread some of my favs....

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
I get that!

message 24: by Eve (new)

Eve I usually prefer owing the book. I'll always want to go back to certain scenes or even reread the book. It is the cost that makes me think I'd better borrow it or buy it second hand.
However, 1. no one from my friend group reads and the library here doesn't include any of the books I'm interested in.
This is why I choose to buy the books I want. And of course because of that certain feeling owing books has. I love it!

message 25: by Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor, Creator, Head Mod, Book Nerd #1 (new)

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
Yeah, that make sense. I always like being able to go back to a book and read my favorite scenes.

And, I totally get how annoying the cost is.

message 26: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 360 comments I like to buy books because I accidentally damage my books a lot (breaking the spine, spilling nail polish on them, etc.) and I'm too worried about damaging someone else's books to borrow them

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
Lol, that's so understandable. XD

message 28: by Jeanna (new)

Jeanna Smith | 7 comments I rarely used to buy books. Only ones I really loved. I went to the library every couple weeks and loved that. However now that I have an e-reader I love to buy them it feels necessary and some I do re-read and there are others I feel I even need the hard copy. Not sure what's changed maybe it's just eaiser to store all my books on the ereader than finding actual space. But I love buying the paper books now too. Even just to look at my favourites. Maybe it's because with the e-reader I no longer feel them when I read them.

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

If I am sceptical about a book, I will usually borrow it and if I end up loving it, I will end up buying the book.

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
That makes a lot of sense.

Sometimes I’m leery about which books I get, but I usually end up getting it anyways.

message 32: by Ally (new)

Ally | 1 comments I almost ALWAYS buy my books. Tbh I just like walking around Barnes and Noble and smell in the new book smells. If I don't have the budget for a book, then I'll just borrow it from our local library. I used to borrow books all the time in elementary school, but in middle school I have lost much time to go to the library, so usually now it's just buy.

message 33: by Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor, Creator, Head Mod, Book Nerd #1 (new)

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
That makes sense. There isn't a Barnes and Noble nearby so I can't really do that. :( So it's mostly online for me.

message 34: by Madysen (new)

Madysen (madysenstanford) | 2 comments I would definitely pick buy over borrow. I love having new books, and adding them to my book shelf. However, I have definitely borrowed books multiple times from the library.

message 37: by matildaa (new)

matildaa (matilda3) | 2 comments I like buying books because I can reread them over and over again whenever I want to without the hassle of borrowing them. Then again if it's a book I own I tend to be overly careful not to damage them, to the extent it affects my reading experience. When I borrow a book from the library I don't feel as though I need to be extra careful. But if I borrow a book from the library and want my own copy it just seems like I'm wasting money on a book I already read. I guess it really just depends on the book for me.

message 38: by Prior Eaton (new)

Prior Eaton | 66 comments Borrowing as you don't have to spend money. If you are impatient then borrowing is much more convenient. When you buy a book it might not come in a good condition and some people only read books once and then they just let the poor book sit on the shelves for years.

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 3729 comments Mod
That makes sense, @Matilda and @Prior.

message 40: by Quill (new)

Quill (therantingraven) I borrow almost all of the books I read because I have a very small bookshelf, and I just adore going to the library. I only buy a book if it really moves me.

message 41: by abby (new)

abby (abby-j) ♡Meli♡︎ wrote: "i generally would say i borrow bc it's gives me a deadline to read"

ikr, I also tend to borrow! after all, it makes us feel guilty if we have to return a book without reading it 😣

meanwhile I bought The Grapes of Wrath, but it's been on my shelf for ages and I haven't read past the first page 😭

still, buying has its perks. it lets me reread the Harry Potter series whenever I want, for the zillionth time!

Your father’s a publisher?!?! That’s so cool!

Do you like that he’s a publisher? Do you ever get to read the books?

message 44: by Lita (new)

Lita (lita_books) | 95 comments It is very cool. We have all of the books home but i didn't read them all. I meet a lot of croatian autors and publishers and sometimes i get to chose book cover.

message 45: by Kirsi (new)

Kirsi I do both. I've run out of shelf space ages ago, so I buy a lot of e-books these days, but I still try to check if the library has it before spending money on it. Our library services are superb, so I try to use them as much as possible.

message 48: by Lomma (new)

Lomma | 5 comments I have never bought any books with my own money before. Is that bad? I borrow all the time from the public library near me but I never buy books! Here's why. I am pretty picky, when I read the synopsis of a book and I like it, then I'm likely to borrow it from my library. That doesn't mean all the time I'm gonna like the book I borrow. Same with buying. I wanna make sure that I LOVE that book before I buy it so that I don't waste my money. In the near future, I wanna start a big collection of books I love and would 100% read again, then I would buy the book. It just ensures that I'm not wasteful, yk? Also, if my library doesn't have a certain book I really want, then I'll look for the ebook online, or like zlibrary (which has literally every book). But it's quite rare since I don't like to read online as such. I prefer a physical copy of a book.

That’s an interesting perspective, and it totally makes sense!

message 50: by Jace (new)

Jace (jace_is_reading) For me it really depends on how much I want to read the book, cause sometimes putting a hold on it takes too long, but I still really do like borrowing books. However, I do also love the feeling of buying a book, so.....I'd say both.
