Douglas Preston was born on May 31, 1956. He is an American journalist and author. He is the author of over thirty-six books, both fiction and nonfiction, many becoming best sellers. He is best known for his adventures written in collaboration with Lincoln Child (the Agent Pendergast series). Preston began his writing career at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In addition to books, Preston writes about archaeology and paleontology for the New Yorker, National Geographic, and Smithsonian magazines. He thoroughly investigates the subject of his books by immersing himself in the subject matter. He has undertaken long horseback journeys retracing historic or prehistoric trails across the South West. He has also participated in expeditions around the world, including a journey deep into Khmer Rouge held territory in the Cambodian jungle with a small army of soldiers to become the first Westerner to visit a lost Angkor temple. He was the first person in 3,000 years to enter an ancient Egyptian burial chamber in a tomb know as KV5 in the Valley of the Kings. In 2000, he moved to Florence, Italy, with his family to investigate an unsolved murder mystery involving a serial killer which resulted in problems with the Italian police. He also participated in an expedition that led to the discovery of an ancient city in an unexplored valley in the Mosquitia mountains of Eastern Honduras. On that expedition he and other expedition members contracted an incurable tropical disease.
