Ann Johnson Is there any way to look at a book's one star reviews? I'm always curious about these - did the reviewer actually read the book? Do they dislike the genre or subject matter, etc.

L J | 117 comments Goodreads: On the current book page, not the beta book page, look just above the reviews - hover on "More filters" click on 1 star.

Amazon: at the top of reviews on left side click on 1 star

If those who rated book 1 star wrote reviews that should show them.

The goodreads section that offers Filters and Sort Order also offers Text-Only, so you don't have to scroll past ratings-only 'reviews.'

That section is just above community reviews, below your friends reviews & questions.

I have never given a one star review but can only imagine such to be the case.

Raymond Walker (raynayday) | 48 comments I have given a two star review where the book lacks imagination, style and content for me. Others may think otherwise.

L J | 117 comments Goodreads defines 1 star rating as "did not like it" so there are probably many well written award winning books with 1 star rating.

Raymond Walker (raynayday) | 48 comments Very true, for me the worst would be "The Unbearable lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera. Hated it. One star from me despite the fact it was well written.

I think that 'did not like it' isn't strong enough... that would tend to be the equivalent of two stars for me. 1 star is more like: how the heck did anyone think this worth killing a tree for...

In general for me
2* not my thing but not a total waste
1* a tree died for this?!?

I also rate books 1* to remind me how much I disliked them regardless of quality or how much others like them.

Holly (goldikova) I have to admit that when I've given a book a one star rating I tend to read through all the other one star reviews. Usually I get more enjoyment from reading those than I got from the book we reviewed.

Dead tree technology is the epitome of science......

The tree analogy is one I've used for decades. Like my favorite signed hardcovers it is not something I am ready to leave behind despite now reading the e editions of those books.
