The April 2021 Reader Pick is Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey. Please use this thread to post questions, comments, and reviews, at any time.

Official description:
Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

Sandy (msdachshund) | 4 comments I just purchased this book. So for me this is the very first time reading this book. I look forward to reading this book. Also, this is my first time being apart of a space opera book club.

Welcome to the group, Sandy!

Indeneri | 4 comments Looking forward to this one. I'm a bit fan of the tv series.

Sandy (msdachshund) | 4 comments I didn’t know there was a tv series.

It's called The Expanse.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQuTA...

Also, I'm not a 'bit' fan, I'm a BIG fan!

Trike | 777 comments I quite liked this book, and I highly recommend the TV series. (It’s on Amazon Prime.) It’s one of those series that gets deeper as you go, rewarding paying attention to everything. It’s not like some of these “illustrated radio” TV shows one can half-watch in the background.

I watched the first season and a couple episodes of the second season on TV, but after that I thought it fell off. Too much politics, not enough action.

Sandy (msdachshund) | 4 comments So far I am really enjoying the book. I’m almost through chapter 8 on audiobooks. I’m having trouble with my eyes tight now so I’m doing audio books. I generally like books better than the tv versions.

Trike | 777 comments The action picks up, as do the stakes for the politics. The Rocinante’s battle in s2e2 is pretty badass, and there are a couple in later seasons which equal it.

The TV series is produced by the same guys who wrote the books, so it’s quite faithful to the story and characters. Some things are compressed and moved around due to the nature of film versus book, but overall it tracks.

Ally | 99 comments I didn't read the books but I watched the 5 seasons. Is it worth it to read the books ?

Sandy (msdachshund) | 4 comments Yes the books are worth reading. I am way more immersed in the books that the tv series.

KJFSFFAN | 2 comments As with a previous comment I found the early part of the TV series rather hit & miss but once the characters & plotline were formed I could appreciate what an excellent programme it was. I also prefer books to tv adaptations so I have just purchased the first 8 books with the intention to get immersed once I have completed re-reading all the Dune prequels. Should be fun!

Lee (leeleahu) Welcome to the group, Sandy!

I've watched all the seasons on tv, and recently picked up the book. Looking forward to seeing how it compares. Generally, I find I prefer books over tv. It's a lot easier (and cheaper), I think, to create quality worlds and stories in written format than in visually recorded format. My experience so far has been than books are better.

Kathryn (bugscrap) | 7 comments I read this earlier, I'm on Abaddon's Gate now. I started watching the TV show until I got to the point it caught up with the books.
Ont major praise for these books is that I LOVE the characters. Even later ones like Bobbie, Avasarala, Anna, they're all so well-written. You even get a feel for minor characters.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I love the series too and I've read this book but I have not read any others yet. Part of this book actually reminded me of the 1989 film Leviathan.

The series is incredible. The effects and the look of the show remind me of Babylon 5. I really was impressed at the casting. Especially for the 2 male leads of Leviathan's Gate.

Hope you guys like the book as much as I did.

Andrea Barringer | 7 comments We own all of the books! Such a great series. But I need to ask, did anyone find it hard to follow at first? The first few chapters in book 1 took some getting used to. The author just springs into that world's vernacular and I was so lost for a while.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 342 comments I didn't find it hard to follow at first, I have to say, somehow I just slipped into the whole vernacular thing comfortably.

I"ve also enjoyed the TV series, but I have struggled with the (view spoiler)

Lizzie | 303 comments I couldn't get into the first book. I finished it, but didn't like it. This is one of the few times where I liked the TV series better than the book.
