Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2594 comments A new mystery series with a lot of potential. The setting is Ghana and starts with the assassination of the leading challenge candidate for President. Right after though, the story veers off to the "sakawa" boys and the internet scams perpetrated on innocent people around the world. A widowed American man, Gordon Tilson, who was happily married to a Ghanaian woman for years, participates in an on-line support group with other widowed men and women. He's connected with a lovely lady in Ghana and they seem to have developed an affectionate on-line relationship. When he finds out that her sister was involved in an accident and needs money for the hospital, he starts sending money.

The story shifts again to Emma Djan who works for the police but not in the Criminal Investigations as her father had. This is the person who will become the focus of the new series and she is a very likeable character. The story goes back and forth, between what went on with Gordon and how Emma ends up being involved in the case. The story takes a deep dive into the sakawa scammers and the corruption at all levels.

The setting in Ghana is well developed by an author who was born in Ghana, a former physician turned writer. He has another series I may have to look into but I will definitely pick up the next Emma Djan.

I enjoyed the audio very much, the reader, Robin Miles, did a terrific job with all the Ghanaian words and the various characters. Ms Miles has won Audie awards and I can see from this that they were well-deserved.

I've put it on my TBR and hope to get to it fairly soon but I will, of course, be tied up reading a few gothics for April!
