alt means that when there is an error, what should it call it. Like the name of the image kind of thing.

Alt is the part where you add the description for the image. If a person can't somehow see the image, this should help.
The required alt attribute specifies an alternate text for an image, if the image cannot be displayed.from W3C (World Wide Web Consortium)
The alt attribute provides alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it (because of slow connection, an error in the src attribute, or if the user uses a screen reader).
People with visual impairments (like me) would benefit a lot if people added some sort of description for the image in the alt tag.
I think GR should have some sort of a detailed explanation for the alt tag.
