To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers - 3 stars - My Review

Narrator and flight engineer Ariadne is part of a four-person crew in deep space. Their mission is to find life on remote planets, gather information, and eventually return to earth. She is writing a message home and tells the story of the crew’s visit to four planets. She hopes for a response, but they have been out of touch with earth for a long time.

“I don’t know whose eyes and ears this message has reached. I know how much a world can change within the bookends of a lifetime.”

The book contains a decent amount of (mostly fictional) science, which is explained well. It is not a plot-based book. I was expecting a bit more activity at the sites they visited.

I had previously read and very much enjoyed Chambers’ The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, so when the Capital Cities’ library group recommended this one, I thought I would give it a go. I found it worthwhile. It is a story that spurs the reader to contemplate the benefits of space exploration.
