Sebastian gets dispatched by Sir Lovejoy to investigate Pym’s murder and runs into immediate resistance, especially from other Middlesex magistrates. What implications did you infer at this point? Were you concerned about his safety, even more so than normal?

Jo Ann (jojog) | 72 comments Usually the officers working with Lovejoy are helpful to Sebastian, but in this case it sounded like he would be jumping into a corrupt "police" force. I'm only halfway through the book, but I suspect Sebastian will be uncovering this corruption at a personal cost to his (and Hero's??) safety.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments We read in previous books how corrupt the magistrates are. When this group started putting up roadblocks, I thought they were afraid that Sebastian was going to reveal all their evil deeds.

I'm always worried about Sebastian's safety. In this case, he is fighting against people in all social classes. I did think he was in real danger from the publicans and the brewery owners. I wasn't worried about Hero too much until later in the story.

It was clear early on that there was all consuming corruption within the district’s magistrates so I knew he needed to tread carefully. It wasn’t until the brewery angle was introduced that I got really worried because it now involved some really powerful men with ties to Jarvis.
