Pippa has taken up with Ian Ryker, a violent man whose father was a publican who lost his tavern when he refused to buckle under to the East End corruption and was later murdered. Pippa’s son was clearly fearful of the man. Were you worried on his behalf? Did you figure Sebastian would eventually intervene because of his guilt over Jamie’s death and a sense of responsibility to his child?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments I expected the story to turn to Ryker abusing Jamie's son. He was a nasty character. Sebastian would keep an eye on the situation and step in when needed.

I didn't understand Pippa allowing Ryker to have so much control over her, her son, and the tavern. She had a means of support thanks to Jamie leaving her with the tavern, even if it was to go to his son eventually.

You’ve expressed exactly what my fear was about Ryker and Patrick. Frankly, I was at first surprised that Pippa was letting him get away with that. I fully expected Sebastian to keep an eye on the child.

But, the more I thought about it, I believe Pippa got in over her head. I think she let him take over her pub and was stuck with him.

Jo Ann (jojog) | 72 comments I think she got in over her head as well. I was just glad that Sebastian read the situation immediately.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments I have to remind myself that this is the 1800s. Women don't have the freedom to be independent. I guess she thought she needed Ryker or any man for that matter.

I'm wondering how they sold the pub. Sebastian thought that Jamie left it to Patrick. How could Pippa sell it?

I’m trying to recall the details but there was one moment when Sebastian mused over how Ryker had probably taken over the pub, not legally. He was a violent man that she never was going to get rid of and he just took over. Pippa is also apparently attracted to dangerous men.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments I need to go back and read that again. I thought Jamie protected the pub.

You are right about Pippa.
