The cover grabbed my attention right away. It reminded me of old fashioned silhouette drawings.
I was very excited to start reading the story as I love a good YA and this one has a new spin on magic and apprenticeship. In the end, I was a little disappointed. The story line has gaps and makes illogical leaps. The period it is written in is vague but inconsistent - like maybe Victorian but then she whips up pasta with basil. And the characters' actions were somewhat confusing - like how the teacher/student relationship had romantic undertones almost immediately. On the positive side, I liked her writing style and the underlying ideas in the book.
