Sounds exactly like A Certain Slant of Light, but it was published in 2005, not before.

I agree that it sounds like A Certain Slant of Light.
The Skinjacker (Everlost) trilogy, by Neal Shusterman. It especially sounds like the second book, I think. None of them are romances, though.
