My copy of this came into the library late last week, so I'm starting it late. Has anyone read it yet and has thoughts about any stories or Robert Penn Warren? Please share.
Took this with me and read The Circus in the Attic while at the lake with the boys.
In the Attic is his Circus, with all his dreams that are so different than his just ok life. Loss of three and his Circus which gave him some comfort.
Penn gives us a view of the Southern life during the Civil War through WWII and how it was dealt with.

Some follow up: I read that Warren did not do well with short stories compared to his novels and poems. In hopes of making a fast buck and did not, he stated:
“Short stories are out for me.”
Warren's best-known work is All the King's Men, a novel that won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1947.

I have to mention before I forget that I understand why he didn't feel confident writing short stories. I read a little of the book and was not enthused to continue. His writing with this did not capture the same sense of life as All the King's Men.
I had a hard time getting into a couple of the stories. I started I think 3 and ended up with The Circus I felt I forced myself threw it.

According to GR, this is a collection of Penn Warren’s best short fiction: two novelettes and twelve stories that skillfully handle a variety of themes and styles. “Worth reading for their craftsmanship and variety.” — Charles Poore, New York Times.
