How do you react when a MC in a book dies? Does it affect you? How do you handle it?

Lu | 25 comments It depends on the character. There are times that I read it and go 'oh, okay. This character died. Yes, I can live with that.' There are times that I get angry at the author, times where I see that it is a strategy to make the other character stonger for facing a hard time. But there times that I crack, and the death devastestes me, and I cry like a baby. I have scared many people that were around me when I was reading the death of a character, by crying really hard, and needed to be hugged to calm down. I may let myself imerge too much into the stories, and I am easy to cry, so these are strong contribuiting factors for my reactions. How about you?

toointofiction | 186 comments If I grow attached to the character (which happens when the characters are well-written and the authors are good at writing them) then I will definitely cry my eyes out and be really sad for days on end even if their death was written in a way that makes a lot of sense (literary speaking). I will most likely get mad at the author too (more often if the death felt uncalled for or unnecessary to me), but not in any way that would prompt me to be a total *ssh*le on social media like many idiots do. I'll just read a whole lot of fanfiction to make myself feel a little better.

Unknown Reader | 180 comments Depends on the writing, the timing of death, the reactions of the characters and also what happens after.

I’m a person who can get attached to characters if I like them. Sometimes, I don’t mind main character dying if I could get the appropriate reactions from other characters, I feel like that’s a form of closure. But when the main character loses someone important ? That can affect me.

The worst deaths are when the character’s wish is unfulfilled, when the character leaves someone dependent behind, when the character dies misunderstood, when the character dies from the hand of their enemy they were supposed to defeat, and many more ..

If these worst deaths happen, then my next book is 100% a comfort light read.
