This is the place for a general, no spoiler discussion of She Would be King.

Here are a few links relating to the book:

A good interview with Moore. from Powell's Books. Very minor spoilers.

Review from The Guardian. There are some major spoilers here, so you may want to wait until you've finished the second chapter to read it.

A video interview from Audible. It's titled "On Narrating Her Debut Novel" but the discussion is much more wide ranging, touching on Moore's background, inspirations, and publishing experiences.

This is a good, brief overview of the history of Liberia as it relates to its essential colonization by former American slaves and their frequently fraught relationship with indigenous Liberians.

Here's a brief history of the Maroons in Jamaica. https://cyber.harvard.edu/eon/marroon...

This video on the Maroons is from couple polished white guys with a YouTube travel channel. It has some some basic history and some excellent video of the mountains where the Maroons lived and live.

A segment from CaribNation on the Maroons.

Thought I was going to have to bail on this one, but my library hold just came through---woohoo!

Excellent, Marc and Ginny! (And Hugh, of course).

I was posting late last night, and forgot to add that this is the place to post general impressions, other interesting links, etc..

Is anyone listening to the audiobook? I primarily read a print version, but also listened to quite a bit on audio. Moore reads it herself, and she is an actor in addition to being a writer, so she does a great job with the different accents. It's nice hearing the pronunciations of some names, as well.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I read this in audio in September 2019. I rated it 4 stars. My recollection of the book is slowly returning, although I do remember where I was walking for part of the book!

Bretnie | 838 comments I just finished recently, so looking forward to the discussion! I learned so much about Liberia. I'm embarrassed by how little I knew, but grateful that the book led me to look up a lot more afterwards!

I knew the basic history of Liberia. And I'm old enough to remember when Samuel Doe lead a coup against the ruling class of Liberia to become the first native president. (I also remember Ronald Reagan calling him "Chairman Moe".)

I knew nothing about the history of the Maroons in Jamaica, that was fascinating.
