Personal perspective from Lionel Barber, former FT editor (2005-2020). Unique view on window of recent history, including insights into the newspaper industry and interactions of the rich and powerful through the Great Financial Crisis, Brexit and increasing political polarization, ending with the global pandemic. Self serving at times but interesting speed read through history.

While important to the overall feel, the author’s present day commentaries in every chapter makes the narrative a touch choppy.

The book was modeled on Dean Acheson’s “Present at the Creation”, a personal history of post WWII US foreign policy.
