To get a copy of The Yield and other titles, please visit https://lacrossecounty.org/library for access to both print and digital reading materials through our catalog, Hoopla, and Libby.

Unfortunately it says on Libby that the license for this title has expired. It does look like I can get a print version through the library though.

It is a beautiful book, with a unique narrative style. We also really enjoyed the dictionary, and how it opened one's eyes up to both the past and the present. And it doesn't hurt to learn a few words in a new language!

The Yield was a very beautiful, yet heartbreaking and hopeful story based on very real history.
It seems that the book is one example of many throughout history where indigenous agency is disregarded and ancestral land is taken forcibly, and then used for financial gains...
I'm glad that in the book at least, August and her family were successful in stopping their land from being taken. That's not always the case.

It is definitely a very important book. Worth the read.

Some starting questions:
Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?
Who was your favorite character?
What do you think is the significance of the book's title?
There are three intertwining narratives in The Yield. Why do you think Tara June Winch chose to tell the story this way?
The dictionary that August's grandfather, Poppy, assembles features a real indigenous language, Wiradjuri. What impact did it have on you that he chose to tell his life story through his native language?
The Yield features stories about boarding schools for indigenous children. Did this raise any similarities for you in terms of the indigenous history the books discussed?
