Welcome to the With the Fire on High Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on June 1st and anyone can join at any time. Amelia (whatameliareads) | 268 comments I am not part of this buddy read but may pop in to discuss the book (if that's okay?) as I read it last year and absolutely LOVED it.

Definitely welcome! Looking forward to reading this next week and discussing.

Michelle (shelbrenn) Would love to join in

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments I finished the first section. Ooohhh I am loving this book so far. The small chapters make it so accessible to just keep reading.

Jen K | 1547 comments Also loving this so far. Elizabeth Acevedo is such a beautiful writer!

Welcome!

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments I finished the second part. I love that the author writes like real people having a conversation. I have also notice that I need a snack while listening to the book.... my snacks are not nearly as good as the food described in this book.😊

Jen K | 1547 comments The writing is so good, Acevedo's narration like spoken word and I couldn't stop until I finished. Such a great story of identity, responsibility and the difficulties of just being a teen.

Jenner | 51 comments I decided to jump in on this as well! I just finished the first quarter. I am absolutely loving the storytelling. Acevedo knows how to reveal things slowly which I really appreciate.

@Kristina I totally agree about the small chapters.

I am excited to continue reading.

Michelle (shelbrenn) Having a hard time getting into it. Jumps around too much with all of the little chapters. So from your responses so far I should push on?

I quite enjoyed this book but also the short chapters didn't bother me. The chapters don't get longer but there isn't as much jumping around once the backstory is completed. Are you a physical or ebook? I really recommend the audio for Acevedo's narration. It might help?

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments I finished this book and I am officially a fan of the author. Loved this book so much!!

Jenner | 51 comments I also really enjoyed this book! I think the writing and storytelling were exceptional and the story gave me lots of feel good vibes especially in the end. I am really glad I joined in on this buddy read!

Michelle (shelbrenn) Yes, reading as an ebook, might look for it in audio. Haven't given up yet just slowed my pace. Read Clap When You Land and liked it. so keeping on!!

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments The audio is fantastic

aikaterine (missaikaterine) | 347 comments Hey guys!! Totally late but I finished this book just last night and I’m still in awe that I haven’t read anything by Acevedo before.

The short chapters didn’t bother me personally, because they didn’t tire me.

I was also amazed at how much you can learn for a person from only one of their works. It was also so so interesting to find out about the Black-Spanish experience, and the way people from the South Americas view colloquialism. I’m a sucker for these glimpses into other peoples’ thoughts!

Her The Poet X is also amazing! I still need to read her latest. So glad you enjoyed it!!

I can’t wait to read both The Poet X and Clap When You Land!!! I’ve heard so many good things about them!

Leslie Dauer-Creek | 320 comments Curious here... I can join this buddy read even though it's after the scheduled time? I have this book and thought this would be the perfect excuse to finally read it.

CocoaKissedPages | 3 comments I'm reading this now on audiobook. I'm about halfway through it. I love that the author is narrating it because it really makes the characters come alive, you can really feel the passion and love Emani feels when she's talking. I love the dialogue between the characters and the descriptions of their surroundings and emotions. The only thing I don't like is Jamal's mother, Emani needs to slap tf out of her. I'll come back with an update when I finish.

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments Absolutely agree with you

Ohhhh, it sounds amazing, I'd love to listen to it on audio *-*

CocoaKissedPages | 3 comments I really loved this story. I wouldn't say there was a lot of action, but it's not supposed to be. It's a coming of age story about a girl learning to trust herself, others, and her place in the world. The prose was absolutely beautiful and I fell in love with Emani's story so much that I am BEGGING for a part two. I would definitely recommend this to everybody and consider it a new favorite. I listened to it on audiobook from the library but I definitely need to purchase a physical copy for myself.

CocoaKissedPages | 3 comments I definitely recommend it
