Read the book in 2019, it was not new that year.

A female historian finds a photo (and a diary?) of a young woman with a mischievous look in her eye and resolves to find out more. In the background of her growing obsession, she is getting married to a man whom she does not care for much. Her mother was a famous violinist who died in a car accident, later she discovers he was cheating on her father and her father knew.

She uncovers the history of a house where one summer the young woman in the photo went missing and the man who took it died. Someone else was shot. They had all been out to a summer house to paint when a jealous man came with a gun - the adopted brother of the young woman. Eventually, the historian realises that the young woman had hidden under the floorboards and had been forgotten, eventually dying there.

Potentially the house also used to be a boarding school where a child drowned? Or that might be a whole other story.

I think there are multiple narratves. There is a young man who is also interested in the house and in finding out more about the artist and his subjects.
