Cindy (cindyd) I'm really excited to be starting the challenge this year. I generally read more fiction than nonfiction, but what I really enjoy is a well-told story, regardless if it is fiction or not. I am a teacher, so I read a lot of YA so that I have books to suggest to students.

This is a list of what I read in January:

Twenty-five Books That Shaped America: How White Whales, Green Lights, and Restless Spirits Forged Our National Identity Twenty-five Books That Shaped America How White Whales, Green Lights, and Restless Spirits Forged Our National Identity by Thomas C. Foster

Princess of the Silver Woods Princess of the Silver Woods (Princess, #3) by Jessica Day George

Bad Pets Most Wanted! by Allan Zullo

All Things Irish: A Novel All Things Irish A Novel by Michael Loynd

Yellow Star Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy

An Irish Country Village An Irish Country Village (Irish Country #2) by Patrick Taylor

Remember, Remember (The Fifth Of November): The History Of Britain In Bite Sized Chunks
Remember, Remember (The Fifth Of November) The History Of Britain In Bite Sized Chunks by Judy Parkinson

D is for Dahl D is for Dahl A gloriumptious A-Z guide to the world of Roald Dahl by Wendy Cooling

Audio books:

A Good Marriage A Good Marriage by Stephen King

The Lake of Dreams The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards

A Midsummer Night's Dream A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Welcome to the group Cindy. I too am a teacher. As a teacher, I get to read a lot of fun, exciting, interesting books.

What did you think of Yellow Star? I was able to get a copy for a steal of a deal but I haven't read it yet.

Hi Jodi!

I had it on my to read list for years & I regret that I didn't get a copy of it sooner. I have read a lot of Holocaust literature, but this was written in sort of a poetry/prose combo style that I found quite enjoyable. I have a few students each year who really get interested in the Holocaust after reading Anne Frank, & I think this will be on my suggestion list for them to read. :)

Is this digestible? Also, I've heard that there is a certain slant to this writer's work; do you agree? By slant, I mean political.

Thanks,
Andrew

Cindy (cindyd) Well, I listened to the audio book and it was abridged (I didn't check before I bought it), so I thought that it was the abridgment that made it a bit difficult. It skipped around a lot in time, so in one paragraph it would be discussing an event in 1915 and then it would leap to 1918. It was also a bit dry, but since I am very interested in World War One, that didn't bother me too much. I think he was slanted toward the Allies but that wasn't really surprising to me since a lot of historical works are slanted toward the side of the victors.

I just saw this now Cassandra! OOPS!!

I really enjoyed the books from the Irish Country series by Patrick Taylor, Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (which I left off of my October audio list), and Miss Dreamsville by Amy Hill Hearth.
