Laura ☾ | 1102 comments Ok I'm up to Chapter 6 and this is not at all what I expected the book to be! I am kind of enjoying it but still undecided how I feel...

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments I've read up through Chapter 6 too and I was feeling a little "meh" for the first hundred or so pages. BUT that's also how I felt the first time I read RWRB (I promise I'm trying really hard not to compare them but it's DIFFICULT), and then once I finished it I saw what all the slow burn stuff at the beginning was for and it's one of my favorite books of all time. I think Chapter 6 was the turning point and things will only go up from here. I'm pretty sure this is just Casey McQuiston's writing style, so we can probably expect this plot structure from any of her books.

anyway I love June

OMG AND WE'RE READING IT IN JUNE

serendipity

nαомι αndιno (nndno) | 28 comments I already have the book but I'm delaying on starting it since I really loved RWRB and I'm scared it's not going to live up to my expectations 🥺
But I think I'll be starting tomorrow or Friday <3

Laura ☾ | 1102 comments Ok I'm done..

Honestly, I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as Red, White & Royal Blue, but that may be down to me not liking the whole paranormal aspect of this much (and to be honest I haven't liked a lot of books that went down the same vein)..

I feel like, while the side characters were great, I didn't connect to August or June all that much somehow, and that was just a shame.

This was definitely a quick, fun, read, but to me it was just lacking that spark that really made it stand out amongst the sea of books!

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments @Laura, I completely agree with you (mostly)! I didn't love that the fantasy element was more like a fabulism, it-doesn't-make-sense-but-just-roll-with-it kind of vibe. If I have a magical element in a book, I want it to have RULES and I want it to make SENSE. However, I did connect with June and I do absolutely have a huge crush on her and want her to date me, so that's fun :D

I think it was hard to connect with August because she is a closed-off character for a decent chunk at the beginning, so even though it's third person limited from her perspective it was hard to click.

I did cry multiple times, so I can see this book growing on me the more times I read it, but for now it is not a new favorite, which is disappointing because this was the surest I've ever been about a 5 star prediction. Oh how the mighty have fallen lol

Abigail | 210 comments I'm perfectly fine with things not being explained fully, mostly because I'll probably forget how they work anyways, so I was alright with the plot of the book.

I'll agree that the beginning was a bit slow but then I speed read the last 3/4 so it made up for it 😂

@Katie I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a huge crush on Jane

nαомι αndιno (nndno) | 28 comments yes, I also agree with @Laura and @Katie
although I normally do love fantasy and paranormal books, this one wasn't my favorite and not connecting with the characters made it harder to enjoy but it's still a good book :)

Amelia (whatameliareads) | 268 comments I found it was more magical realism than sci-fi but that might just be me. I loved this but not as much as RW&RB. My favourite bit was the whole mystery/missing persons/memory rebuilding. Also agree that it was a slow start but I felt it really picked up towards the end and I was constantly putting the book down to process my feelings & what was going on.

I'm not normally a fantasy reader at all either so it was outside of my normal reading but I definitely enjoyed it

Rosina | 330 comments Finally got my copy.....ive finished the first chapter and really liking it so far....thinking it will be a quick read...

Rosina | 330 comments Starting chapter 6.....went into this blind....didnt read reviews or even look at the genees.....so far my thoughts.....really like the writing style....August i am starting to like more and more....i keep thinking a strange version of Friends....but then read the Scooby reference and totally agree they are more Scooby than Friends....

Alex (The Scribe Owl) | 249 comments I didn't think I was going to get to this, but I'm glad I did! It was a decent read, though I still liked RW&RB better.

I finally finished this read. Thank you Alex for putting down what was in my head. I agree with everything you said. I enjoyed the side characters more. I really couldnt connect with August. I loved the drag shows and all the performers.

Elysian (haeliks) | 255 comments Sooo. I finished this and I disliked RW&RB but was very excited about this one- wanting to give it a shot and... it was okay?

Loved the mystery and all of the side characters are great and hilarious. (I want a story just about Nick,Myla and Wes and just them being friends and hanging out and getting in trouble) August felt like a vessel to experience the story through. Her character was basically being fueled by anxiety and being a smart detective nerd, but she did not feel like neither of those things for 80% of the book. And Jane? Idk. Ig she was just nice and punk.

Romance was a big meh for me. Could have been cute, but I was not invested in the characters who were having the romance and also the whole 'having sex in a public subway' was a bit eh.

Kylie Stoneburner (lunchbox89) | 82 comments I put this on my TBR just because I loved RWRB SO MUCH! I honestly forgot the synopsis when I started reading it for the group read, so I was totally surprised by the paranormal aspect of it. Normally I would’ve been put off by that, but I think the characters helped pull me through this story. I’ve also admittedly never read a W/W romance, only M/M before now, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think the character development was so great; each character had depth and flair and I want to be their roommate!
