This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on July 5. Voting will start the next day, July 6 and will close at the end of the day on July 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Summer Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

3-2-1

3–2–1 was a UK game show, that ran for ten years on ITV, between 29 July 1978 and 24 December 1988. Ted Rogers was the host and “Dusty Bin” was the mascot (yes, he was a dustbin with a smiley face, and even has a Facebook page, despite the show going off the air long before Facebook started! https://www.facebook.com/DustyBinOffi...).

Three books totalling at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Required: As it was a UK game show based on a Spanish format, at least one of the books you choose must be at least 50% set in either the UK (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland - but not Eire) or Spain.

3: Read a book with an author with three name parts – these can be initials, full names, etc. Remember, a hyphenated name only counts as one part, not two. Ex. Alexander McCall Smith, T J Klune or P Djeli Clark work, but Peter Godfrey-Smith would not.

2: Read a book that is part of a series AND includes a 2 in its series number in parenthesis after the title (#2, #12, #21, #22, etc).

1: Read a book with a one-word title, where the initial of the title word can be found in either TED ROGERS or DUSTY BIN.

Jessica (vividomestic) Jessica D’s 50 point task idea

We Didn't Start the Fire

Billy Joel was one of the top musicians of the 1980s, with hits spanning the entire decade. One of those hits (and one of my favorites) was 1989’s We Didn’t Start The Fire. The lyrics mention newsworthy and memorable names, places, and events from the late 1940s all the way through the 80s. This challenge highlights some of the lyrics mentioned in the 80s segment of the song.

Choose three books totaling at least 750 pages. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Book 1: Sally Ride
Choose a fiction book with a main page genre of Space that either A) features a female protagonist
or
B) has a female author.

Book 2: Foreign debts
Choose a book that features a character who moves to a new country to live (not just travel). The move must take place during the book.

Book 3: Rock and roller cola wars
Choose a book whose author’s first and last initials can be found in the words COCA COLA, COKE, and PEPSI. Both initials do not have to be in the same word. For example, City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong would be allowed (K from COKE and A from COLA).

TraceyL | 1069 comments TraceyL's 50 Point Task - 1980's Slang

Young people living in the 1980's used a lot of fun and unusual slang words. Some were short-lived, while others are still used today. This task is based around some of my favorite 80's slang words.

Choose three books totaling at least 750 pages. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Book 1: Hella
This adverb can mean either “a lot of” or “very, extremely, really,” and it’s an abbreviation of helluva, as in, “he had one helluva headache.”

Read a book with an adverb in the Title only. Subtitles should be ignored. The word must be listed as an adverb on dictionary.com.

Examples:
Truly Madly Guilty (Truly & Madly)
Y is for Yesterday (Yesterday)
We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Always & In)

Book 2: Gnarly
Gnarly can be a term of disapproval, meaning “bizarre, frightening, amazing,” or, conversely, it can be used to describe something that is “wonderful, first-rate.” It was popularized by Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).

Read a book by an author you have previously read, and given one of their books either a 1 or a 5 star rating. Required: state the book you previously read and the rating you gave it.

Book 3: Tubular
Surfers in the U.S. used tubular to refer to “a cresting wave: hollow and curved, so that it is well-formed for riding on,” and soon, it came to mean “the ultimate in perfection.”

Read a book with a beach on the cover. Both sand and water must be visible. Stylized or abstract covers are allowed as long as both sand and water are represented.

Acceptable Covers:
Duma Key by Stephen King The High Season by Judy Blundell The Forever Summer by Jamie Brenner Until the Day I Die by Emily Carpenter Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno

Not Acceptable Covers:
Beach Read by Emily Henry Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid The Hidden Beach by Karen Swan The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman The River by Peter Heller

Florence | 679 comments Florence's 50 Point Task -Heathers!

I was born in 1989, so let's celebrate my favourite 1989 film Heathers!

This is a three book task, pick 1 task per option.Your books must total 750+ pages. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Option 1- My Teen Angst Bullsh*t Has A Body Count
Heathers is a perfect example of a dark comedy.

A) Read a book with an MPG Humour or Comedy ( standalone or embedded is fine), AND with a cover that is AT LEAST 50% black according to Tineye.

or

B) Read a book with an mpg Horror or Thriller (standalone or embedded is fine) that contains LESS than 10% black on the cover.

Required: Include cover and Tineye percentage of black in your post.

Option 2- Scrunchies and Slang
I can't see a scrunchie or a blazer without thinking of Heathers, nor can I watch the film without quoting along. "F**k me gently with a chainsaw" and "How very" echo in my head for weeks after watching.

A) Read a book with all the letters SCRUNCHIE or BLAZER in the title and subtitle.

or

B) Read a book with a swear word from this list:https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a809925... OR the word "very" in the title or subtitle. Swear words that have been censored in titles are allowed, such as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, as long as it obviously refers to the swear word. Words must stand alone, and match the list exactly (apart from censored characters).

Option 3- Heather's The Musical
One of the few things keeping me sane throughout lockdown was rewatching Carrie Hope Fletcher's old vlogs from her time playing Veronica in Heathers the Musical. As a symbol of hope for a life returned to normal I bought myself tickets for the upcoming tour of Heathers and I can't WAIT to be back out there.

A) Read a book with a word in the title (no subtitles) that matches one of the words in the song titles listed here: https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/...
"The" and "A" are not allowed.
Required: Point out the matching word and song title in your post.

B) Carrie Hope Fletcher, aside from being a phenomenal musical theatre actress is also an author. Some people have all the talent. Read a book by a youtuber. Books by multiple authors work as long as at least one Author has a youtube channel. This list may help: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...
Required: Link to the author's Youtube Channel in your post.

Optional bonus treat: Watch Heathers!
