Here you can submit your suggestions for our next Group reading.
As always, any non-read book from the List can be chosen; if you'd like to pick a work by someone whose birthday fell in July, here's a spreadsheet with the authors listed by month of birth.

We have 7 days for our nominations; let's get started!

Carlton | 93 comments How about The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, which looks like a fun read?
Apparently named as the greatest crime novel of all time by the British Crime Writers' Association in 1990.

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) I'm still on The Three Musketeers but The Daughter of Time is, indeed, a fun read.

I have An Island Garden by Celia Laighton Thaxter and Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler waiting for July. So for a nomination, I'll go for the shorter An Island Garden.

@Karen,
I have An Island Garden by Celia Laighton Thaxter and Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler waiting for July. So for a nomination, I'll go for the shorter An Island Garden.

I couldn't find An Island Garden among the books listed in James' Book, although I see it's in our group bookshelf: it was mentioned in one of the newsletters (the 7th one). For this very reason I'd suggest to pick, for our main readings, only the books from the original list; we can organize buddy readings for all the others. What do you all think about this idea?

As for me, I'd suggest a well-known book, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) Oh, apologies. I will check the book list more carefully, as I did learn about that one from browsing the bookshelf here.

No worries, @Karen! 😉
I think those books deserve some attention, too!
Thanks to your previous message I've noticed that the "Books from Newsletters" section should be updated: I'll do it as soon as possible and, if you all agree, once this is done, I think it would be a great idea if each month we'll have a "Co-Read", alongside the "Main' one, for those books, with its nominations and its polls.
So, double thanks!
Should I consider Japanese Inn for your nominations or do you wish to pick another book?

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) Yes, I'll nominate Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler - I picked up a used copy recently - and have a lot of Japan-based reading planned with the Olympics on my mind. Thanks, Mariella!

James Schramm | 5 comments A question. Is there a difference between the Bookshelf and the "original list" and if so, where do I find that list? Thanks.

Thank you for your patience, @Karen!

@James,
The Bookshelf of this Group is an extensive list: it includes both the Original List of books (the ~"1,000 books" mentioned in the title) and some (*) of the ones mentioned in the newsletters sent by James Mustich every couple of weeks.
((*) This should be updated: there are lots of books missing.)
You can find the Original List on James' Mustich webpage, where each book has its own description, or on listchallenges.com; there, the "print" tab shows you the complete list of ~1000 (original) books, sorted by author. Finally, my "Authors-vs-Birthdays" spreadsheet is based only on the Original List.
I hope I've made things clearer. ☺️

James Schramm | 5 comments Thank you, Mariella. Your post was very helpful. We just lost Janet Malcolm. I would like to nominate "In The Freud Archives" by Janet Malcolm.

You're welcome, James. And what a beautiful choice!

Joshua Moravec (jmoravec) | 37 comments I don't have a nomination this month, but I hope we can do a shorter one. Feels like we've had some long ones recently, and I think Magic Mountain is going to take (at least myself) a while to finish :)

I do agree with you, @Joshua. Thanks for your comment, it raises a good point.
