Booknblues | 12059 comments The enjoyment factor was very high for me in reading Less. I do love a travel book and since this one begins with my neck of the woods, Northern California, I loved reading about places I knew. Greer's writing is entertaining and apparently others found it to be so as he won a Pulitzer for it.

I know that others have found Arthur Less to be a bit of a caricature and a bit too snarky, but I was really drawn to him. Less is so lacking in confidence and of purpose. He seems to have drifted through his life and is having difficulty coming to terms with aging and loneliness, when his long time lover leaves him to marry.

To avoid the wedding ceremony he tapes together a series of events which will take him around the world and so begins his series of adventures and misadventures which I was glad to take part in.

Booknblues | 12059 comments A side note to this novel, throughout the book Arthur Less is most often referred to as Less and it kept jogging me a bit, because my husband's name is Les. Add to that at the beginning he talks about dating a professor from UCDavis. I worked on campus for years and my husband was raised in Davis.

In addition he talks about having a cabin on the Russian River in the 70s, well my husband's family had a cabin on the Russian River in the 70's.
