message 1: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hello again all! I'm temporarily filling in for Chris because his Goodreads account is having some identity crisis issues. Since the server change, every time he logs in, he ends up as someone new. He's not able to stay logged in long enough as himself to actually do anything, so I offered to reprise my role as Pollster Mod temporarily to help out. :)

Chris has informed me that this is to be a dual month with a fantasy read and GR Author read. So, if everyone would nominate the two fantasy books and two GR Author books (*Group member status not required), we can get this ball rolling!

Remember: Please list which nominations are for which category, and list title and author along with why you're nominating it. :D

Thanks everyone!

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Thanks for covering for me, Becky. Still having some issues, but not as bad.

Now, let's see some nominations here....

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Ok - I have two nominations, both of which I believe are GR Authors. Well, one I know is, the other I'm not 100% sure (because I'm not sure how to tell other than that his profile doesn't say 'not a goodreads author', which I think does the trick.)

And I'm rambling.

Anyway:

RealmShift by Alan Baxter. I nominated this one last time for GR author, too - it's an indie book, so it needs some loving, and it seems like an interesting dark fantasy with non-typical spiritual explorations, at least judging by the blurb. Plus I've been meaning to read it for awhile, and I need a kick in the pants.

On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. I've heard a lot of goods things about this author, and I recently heard that Pirates 4 is being based on this novel, so I'm curious.

message 4: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Ooo..nice nominations, blackrose. I don't see that Tim Powers is a GR author, unless he has another profile besides his author one. I'll put him on the General Fantasy poll unless I hear that he does. Alan Baxter for sure will go on the GR author poll.

I'm interested in that Powers novel, since I had also heard it was the basis for the next Pirates movie....that certainly makes it intriguing, and can produce some discussion all on its own....

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Ok, thanks. Like I said, I seem to be dense when it comes to figuring out who is and isn't a goodreads author. But, hey, now my nominations don't have to compete against each other - so I can live with that. :)

message 6: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (cswagner) The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks - Assassin type fantasy, something I've never really read before but would like to give it a shot. Plus, I've heard good things about this book.

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson - Have already read this, but would really like to discuss it on here.

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Two excellent choices, Cameron. One question: are you nominating the Weeks as a GR author or General Fantasy? He joined GR earlier this year.

message 8: by Cameron (last edited Oct 07, 2009 10:32AM) (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Hmm, I apologize. I had no idea he had joined GR. I guess I'll nominate it is a GR author read then.

message 9: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments For GR author I'll nominate The Sword-Edged Blonde by Alex Bledsoe. I'm reading it right now and I'm totally engrossed. It's a mystery novel in a medieval fantasy setting.

I will also second Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. I wouldn't mind discussing that one as well. :)

message 10: by Cecile (new)

Cecile | 61 comments I have a nomination for GR author: The Master of Whitestorm by Janny Wurts. It's a standalone fantasy novel. I've meant to read it for some time.

On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers is also on my to read list, so I second it.

message 11: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Good deal. Keep 'em coming, folks...

message 12: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeannekc) I'd like toi nominate Avempartha by Michael Sullivan for the GR author and Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey for the General Fantasy.

message 13: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments I'll take nominations thru October 14, then put up the poll. Here's what we have so far:

Goodreads Authors:

RealmShift by Alan Baxter
The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks
The Sword-Edged Blonde by Alex Bledsoe
The Master of Whitestorm by Janny Wurts
Avempartha by Michael J. Sullivan

General Fantasy:

On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey

message 14: by Sarah (last edited Oct 11, 2009 10:59AM) (new)

Sarah I would suggest Legend by David Gemmell, and The Last Light of the Sun by Guy Gavriel Kay for fantasy books.

And for GR authors - Ellen Evert Hopman's Priestess of the Forest, and Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker.

message 15: by Alan (new)

Alan Baxter Hi all

This conversation popped up on my profile page. Thanks for considering my book for your Book Club. I'm in some very respectable company there! If you do choose mine I'd be happy to chat along with you guys about it, or answer any questions that come up.

Cheers

Alan

message 16: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine General Fantasy:

The Good Fairies of New York by Martin Millar, because I've seen it on the shelf at the bookstore and it intrigues me every time I pass it.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, for the limp and lonely reason that I've never read it, I want to, and I'm hoping others will want to read it and talk about it too.

Sounds like the setting for a good fantasy novel, lol!

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Woohoo - I love poll voting time ;-)

message 25: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments There are actually 2 polls for the December read/January discussion.

I was only able to send invites to 1000 members, and we have more than that. Plus I could only send from one poll. Just wanted everyone to see that there is a General fantasy poll as well as the GR authors poll.

Janny (jannywurts) | 807 comments Cecile wrote: "I have a nomination for GR author: The Master of Whitestorm by Janny Wurts. It's a standalone fantasy novel. I've meant to read it for some time.

Thank you, Cecile!

For anyone unfamiliar with this title, I will put some notes about it in the COMMENTS area of the poll. It has a rather wicked bend to its history - I had to buy the contract back from the original publisher when the story was threatened by The Edit From Hell, for reasons that had nothing to do with the story - the ending was a happy one, and if the group pick opts for the book, I'd be pleased to post the salacious insider details for the curious.

message 27: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Do people realize there are two polls? As of right now there is 50 vote gap between them...

message 28: by Chris (last edited Oct 24, 2009 01:37PM) (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments The Polls are closed. We have a winner for our GoodReads Author Poll: The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks.

In our General Fantasy Poll, we have a tie between Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson and The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. We will run a run-off Poll for one week, until October 31. Go here to vote for the tie-breaker:

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/25...

On a side note, I think it's rather cool that we have a tie between Jordan and Sanderson just a few days before their Wheel of Time collaboration is due to hit the shelves.

message 29: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 807 comments Congratulations to Brent Weeks for Way of Shadows, and thank you to everyone for an amazing turnout and a good race.

message 30: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments What is it they say... It was an honor just to be nominated ;-)

I've not read any Brent Weeks so this will give me something new to try. And a tie!! That's cool - I went and voted.

Robin (The Crown Conspiracy | Avempartha | Nyphron Rising)

message 31: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Oh yeah, I haven't read The Way of Shadows yet either. It's been sitting on my shelf for a while now, so it gives me an excuse to start it.

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Warbreaker has won the run off, so will be our December read/January discussion for General Fantasy.
