I am a big fan of historical fiction and when the novel involves a strong woman, I am bound to like it even more. Virginia Reeve is noted for guiding wagon trains to California successfully and when she is approached by a widow of Sir John Franklin, who was lost attempting to find the Northwest Passage, she jumps at the chance to prove herself.
The books shifts between the story of Virginia and her teams journey and a trial in which she is being charged with murder of a member of her all female team. It is an exciting plot device and I found myself staying up late to finish.
Franklin's expedition and loss is genuine and his wife Lady Jane Franklin did finance several expeditions to find him dead or alive, however none of these expeditions was an all female team, this is an alternate take on history. Virginia Reeve is also based on a real person.
While I really enjoyed reading this book, there were enough issues which brought my rating down a notch, but since we do not have half stars, it was bumped up again.
