Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1740 comments Hi,

After reading the 6th Chapter discussion and listening to the comments on lust in the podcast I was wondering if Banks had referenced Dante's Nine Circles of Hell.

They are...

First Circle: Limbo. ...
Second Circle: Lust. ...
Third Circle: Gluttony. ...
Fourth Circle: Greed. ...
Fifth Circle: Anger. ...
Sixth Circle: Heresy. ...
Seventh Circle: Violence. ...
Eighth Circle: Fraud.
Ninth Circle: Treachery

I am pretty sure Horza encounters all of these on his decent ...

Care to make links with these...

Lust, hmm, Horza's relationship with Yalson results in his final destruction

Gluttony is clearly referenced in the Eaters.

Greed seems to be covered by the Damage game (and returns multiple times).

Anger, plenty of that to go around.

Heresy? This is a point of view ... Leaving this for now, may return later.

Violence... Well it is a Banks book.

Fraud, well Horza is a Changer. In many ways his life is predicated on Fraud.

Treachery rears up at the end (The Idiran's betray Horza in the end).

Note, Banks returns to religion in Surface Detail

Very nice, Iain. Never thought of it that way, but certainly on point.
