"Age of Swords" is the second installment of Michael J. Sullivan's high fantasy series Legends of the First Empire. In this book we are introduced to an even greater cast of characters and a far greater view of the world building behind this spellbinding series. Taking us across the continent, Sullivan catapults us into a world of Dherg (dwarves), Fhrey (elves), and Rhunes (humans) on the verge of war and a fundamental upheaval. AS the title suggests, this book marks the first time in the series' history where humans have gained access to the power of steel to utilize in their war of independence from the Fhrey overlords. Further, a spark of magic kindled in a young human girl serves as a beacon of hope for the survival of the human race.
While this addition mostly serves as a bridge between the first novel and the third, it introduces key world constructing elements that provide a deeper look in the magic system and history that Sullivan has constructed. It is truly invigorating read for all lovers of fantasy.
A wonderful addition to a wonderful series, though lacking the in the scope of the first and third books, "Age of Swords" is a solid high fantasy book.
