Magic doesn't exist in the broken city of Lkossa anymore, especially for girls like sixteen-year-old Koffi. Koffi and Ekon--each keeping their true motives secret from the other--form a tentative alliance and enter into the unknowns of the Greater Jungle, a world steeped in wild magic and untold dangers. The hunt begins. But it quickly becomes unclear whether they are the hunters or the hunted.

In this much-anticipated series opener, fate binds two Black teenagers together as they strike a dangerous alliance to hunt down the ancient creature menacing their home--and discover much more than they bargained for.

ch 6 (view spoiler)[okay so three main characters: Koffi, Ekon and Adiah. I definitely thought Ekon was much older than Koffi she seemed so young? I thought she was like 12 but maybe she’s more of a teenager? I definitely thought Adiah was more teenage and Ekon could definitely be in his 20s. Ekon might have OCD but I’m not sure? Definitely has anxiety. The beginning here was a lot of world building and too many snakes 😩. I’m curious to see what Koffi will do in the jungle (hide spoiler)]

ch 11 (view spoiler)[ I’m totally sucked into this! I’m really enjoying the characters and the world building. I wish we got more from Adiah. She’s such a mystery compared to the other two. I can’t help but think the darajas will be important later on (hide spoiler)]

I was so happy to finish the one series I had from December yesterday lol. So, I think I will be even happier once I'm done with the 3-4 books I have left for January. Then I can just focus on February books.

I think I'm kinda confused. Is Ekon the boy from the beginning who was talking to Koffi?

The jungle calling to Ekon is intriguing but so far not super intrigued overall. There was a lot of info-dumping in the beginning instead of drawing me in and slowly adding worldbuilding. I was intrigued by the cool animal and the night zoo setting but a bit disappointing that now Koffi is away from this setting and the cool animal she would take care of. Kinda wish it went with her on the run somehow. I don't know.

I'm minimally intrigued I guess but waiting to be surprised and sucked in. (hide spoiler)]

It didn't grip me. I think by the time the second one comes out, I may forget most of the story. It doesn't really stand out amongst the other great fantasy books I've read. (hide spoiler)]
