Nancy (paper_addict) This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar

This Is How You Lose the Time War

In the ashes of a dying world, Red finds a letter marked "Burn before reading."

So begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents in a war that stretches through the vast reaches of time and space.

Red belongs to the Agency, a post-singularity technotopia. Blue belongs to Garden, a single vast consciousness embedded in all organic matter. Their pasts are bloody and their futures mutually exclusive. They have nothing in common---save that they're the best, and they're alone.

Now what began as a battlefield boast grows into a dangerous game, one both Red and Blue are determined to win. Because winning's that you do in war. Isn't it?

A tour de force collaboration from two powerhouse writers that spans the whole of time and space.

Discussion begins August 1st and remember to include spoiler tags.

Happy Reading!

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm actually looking forward to this because my husband listened to it and recommends it. I have the ebook checked out; I just have to finish another one first.

Jasmin (read_books62001) | 1 comments Hi
This sounds like a good book. Just started today.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Halfway through; (view spoiler)

Honestly, I almost didn't use spoiler tags, but I know some ppl are very averse to preconceptions so now you're safe. :)

Nancy (paper_addict) I haven’t started yet. My book is in a moving box n a storage unit n another state. If I have to, I will borrow it from the library!

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm done.
I can't figure out how it was written by two people.
I found it more difficult than most of the poetry I choose to read.

I am intrigued by the recommendation for Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments I had read this book in June, and it was probably my least favorite time travel book I had ever read.

So you and your husband have different tastes in books? He seemed to really like it based on your post above and you not so much.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yes, my husband likes thrillers, adventures, whereas I prefer more emphasis on character development. But we both like SF emphasis on the science & speculation, so I did have hopes for this.

And don't get me wrong. I did like it. As it turns out, it is all about the character development... so I'm kinda bemused that my husband liked it. He listened to it in audio, so maybe that's different?

Any of you do the audio?

I don’t like audio. I prefer to read. I get distracted trying to listen to a book.

My husband made a comment a few months back about news programs. He would want me to go watch something and told him I already read an article on it. He finally says “you like to read the news and not watch it.” Duh….35 years and he just figured that out!

Nancy (paper_addict) I haven’t been able to get an ebook from the library and my copy is still in a box in a storage unit n another state. I will be reading this in September and come back.

Cheryl (cherylllr) :smiles: husbands!

Audio is difficult for me, too. I generally do it only on my daily walk, as my route is so routine. And still only with easier books... this one, I just can't imagine listening to.

Ryan Dash (ryandash) | 7 comments In chapter 5 and not feeling this at all. I don't like the writing style and I don't really know what's going on with the plot yet. Should I stick with it a while longer or am I likely to get nothing out of it?

I don't get the five stars reviews. For me it was a one. Snooze fest.

I am considering stopping this one. I got the audiobook and I've listened to most of the first disk and I don't totally understand what it going on, no do I care about these characters. Does it get better?

Ryan Dash (ryandash) | 7 comments I pushed through to chapter 12 and that was enough for me. I felt the same way: I didn't understand what was going on and I didn't care about the characters. From other reviews it seems like there never is anything to really understand about it: the point is the developing relationship between Red and Blue. But for those of us who don't care for them, I guess there's no point in continuing.

Nancy (paper_addict) Sorry, you guys aren’t enjoying the book. My copy is still in storage somewhere. We only have half our stuff out. I haven’t had time to read as I have been ups king every day and into the late evening. With a few trips to the store inbetween.

Maria | 4 comments Just finished this one and I loved it. I didn’t always understand what was going on but had a better idea by the end. Time travel books (which I love btw) often leave me confused especially if I try to keep things straight in my head when reading them so I don’t do that anymore. This one seems not only to go backwards and forwards in time but into different dimensions too. I liked the briskness of the descriptions of their travels. Mostly I loved the gorgeous writing, especially in the letters and the beautiful way Red and Blue’s relationship developed. I’m pretty sure I’ll be thinking about This Is How You Lose the Time War for quite some time.

Nancy (paper_addict) I started this yesterday.

Nancy (paper_addict) I finished this last night and I really liked it. I liked at the end we find there is a (view spoiler).

Maria, I loved the writing too. I like Jeff VanderMeer and the writing kind of me reminded me of him.

They were trying to push events to a certain end and travelled forward, backward and into all branches of time to get the future each wanted. Which makes me wonder if Red and Blue were from the same time line or different?
