I'm posting the August pick a few days early since I will be out of town. But as many of you have seen by now, trekking right along with Lala's Buzzword Readathon challenge, this month we are reading Later which coincides with the theme for "time of the day".

Later is one of the newest of King's published works, having been released just this past March. Being the third story he's published in the hard case crime series, it focuses on the son of a struggling single mother. All he wants in the world is to be perceived as a normal kid. Unfortunately, he's not a normal kid. Jamie Conklin has a gift where he can see and learn things that no one else can see and learn. Pretty soon he finds himself putting his gift to the test with a NYPD detective as they track down a killer...from beyond the grave.

No word on whether or not an adaptation is in the works as of yet, but I could totally see this being a drama series in the near future. I would definitely watch it. Who else here is a fan of the hard case crime books that he's published? Not his usual style, but almost like a cozy mystery. Based on other reviews of the book it seems to be giving off IT vibes with a little bit of The Institute and Firestarter thrown in for good measure. I'm happy that this is a shorter one because I have A LOT of reading planned for August. I'm still in the middle of Mr. Mercedes, lol. Who else is excited to crack the spine on a newly published King book this month?

Summers used to be where I had all the time in the world to read. Now it seems like things keep coming up. I can't wait to pick this book up. I really have enjoyed the Hard Case books. It's nice to read a "cozy mystery" now and again.

No, I think The Colorado Kid is the only inspiration for that series. From what I can tell I think the hard case crimes books are a series that are all written by different authors in which each book kind of acts as a stand alone which makes it easy to pick them up since it's a different mystery in each book. This is the third one that King has contributed. I'm always down for an adaptation though, is Haven a good show?

Okay so I did really like it. And no spoilers...but what in the hell was that ending? Definitely something from left field. Did not see that coming.

Chelley Marie | 202 comments I just finished the book . It was a 3 star for me . I think he could've cut a lot out of the ending but King loves to talk lol
