by Karen Lord
4 stars

The Sadiri home world is attacked, killing nearly everyone and making the planet uninhabitable. The Sadiri regroup on a new planet but the excess males settle on Cygnus Beta, a planet known for its pioneers and refugees. As the months press on the Ministry of Family Planning agrees to a year-long mission to catalog the genetics and cultures of the far-flung communities in an effort to rebuild a stable population.

Native former-homesteader and current-biotechnician Grace Delarua had been working alongside Sadiri Councillor Dllenahkh, so was assigned to the mission. Grace is chatty, passionate and reckless while the Sadiri (and Dllenahkh in particular) are restrained and logical. The team adventures around the world and Grace and Dllenahkh grow closer.

I really liked Lord's world-building, it was understated and casual but I felt I understood the universe. I was rooting for Grace and Dllenahkh too, so was happy to join their ups and downs. This wasn't surprising or action-packed, just a pleasant read.
