30.4 - Sandy's task: Dinosaur Operas!

My 5 year old grandson, like so many his age, is obsessed with dinosaurs. He acts out all sorts of plays with his toy dinos - the funniest part is that the dialogue is all sung, not spoken. So, we call them the Dinosaur Operas.

For this task, you will read 2 books. At least one of those books must be nonfiction (real nonfiction, not pseudo nonfiction about things like zombie attacks). The other book may be fiction or nonfiction.

No books with the main page genres Childrens or Kids may be used. The combined number of pages of both books must be at least 600 .

REQUIRED: Indicate in your post which book is nonfiction.

Book 1 - Read a book with a word of at least 4 letters in the title/subtitle that can be made from DINOSAUR OPERAS.

Book 2 - Read a book written by an author whose initials (ALL initials) can be found in DINOSAUR OPERAS.

Letters may be used only as often as found in the target phrase.

This thread is now open!

Brooke | 1109 comments Sandy that is the cutest! I remember decades ago when my brother was obsessed with dinosaurs and even corrected his teacher in class a couple of times, and now I watch a dino-obsessed nephew act out rampages with his dinosaurs attacking his train sets. But the singing is unique and adorable!

We all love it! He's quite the expert - when I make a statement about dinos that he disagrees with, his response is "well, actually, Grandma....." We call it "boysplaining"!

of course.

This isn't a trick requirement. I just don't want bogus nonfiction - stuff like How to Survive a Zombie Attack.

Emily | 782 comments Is it okay if the Book 1 has a one-word title, as long as that word fits the criteria? (I was hoping to use Dune)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments ROFL, this one brings back memories. My son (15 now) was also big into dinosaurs when he was little. Now I have a 2-year-old nephew who is the new dinosaur fan.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments my niece is a dinosaur fan.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments I have an ARC of Olga Dies Dreaming (which is to be published in January 2022).

Can I use it for option 1? ("DIES" can be made from the target phrase.)

The ARC I have in hand has 373 pages. None of the editions listed show that page number.

Should I default to using the HC 1st edition (linked to above) for page numbers (384 p) ?

My other book has over 300 pages so I'll be over 600 regardless.

Thanks in advance.

yes, follow the normal rules - MMPB, PB, then HB.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments Thank you. That makes perfect sense.

May I suggest that the rules / FAQs be edited to include ARCs in the "determining page length" sections? Right now it speaks only to e-books and audiobooks.

There's no need to have a special rule for ARCs. If it's an ebook ARC, use the ebook rules. If it's a paper copy with no page numbers, request a librarian to add the page numbers. Or, just say that it has no page numbers and use the rules for other editions.

Fly (fly-me-to-the-moo) | 891 comments can I use Poison's Kiss for option 1 (all the letters of poison's in DINOSAUR OPERAS) or does the apostrophe invalidate the word?

yes, the task calls for letters, not characters, so you're good to go.
