Alwynne 6. Jeremias Gotthelf's The Black Spider brilliant Swiss fairy/morality tale from the nineteenth century. A great read for the Halloween season.

Alwynne 7 is Christa Winsloe's The Child Manuela the novel that built on the version of her work represented by the marvellous 1931 movie 'Mädchen in Uniform' and republished in the UK as part of Virago's Lesbian Landmarks series.

Alwynne Glad it helped, thinks it makes more sense once it's clear what his philosophy is and what he's trying to do with it. Otherwise the ephiphany is almost at the end of the book and a bit bewildering before getting to it!

Alwynne 9 is Rilke's Duino Elegies in a translation by Vita and Edward Sackville-West, the first ever English translation published in 1931 and then out of print until newly published by Pushkin Press in 2021.
