20.6 - Seasoned Reader - Kathy KS’ Task: Rearing Twins in the ‘90s

The ‘90s were a busy time. For the entire decade I was a single mom rearing four kids and working full-time, plus occasional supplementary jobs. I wouldn’t have missed any of it and, actually, really miss the chaos!

Read 1 book from one of the 3 options below.
REQUIRED: In your post, indicate the option you used.

Books with the genres "Sequential Art", "Comics", "Comic Book", and/or "Manga" may be used for this task.

Option 1: Activities - Since my kids were in junior high, senior high, and college during this decade and living in small town America, extracurricular activities were extremely important. My schedule was adjusted to attend debates, plays, cheerleading, and LOTS of sports! Depending on the season, that meant following football, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, golf, tennis, and track & field.

Read a book with a cover showing either the sports equipment used in or someone participating in one of these 7 sports: football, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, golf, tennis, or track & field. For the purpose of this task, use these special guidelines:
● Football can include both gridiron football OR soccer
● Cross-country or marathon running must show a participant's number on the shirt
● Track and field is limited to running/hurdling events, shotput, or discus.
● Golf may include miniature golf
● Volleyball, basketball, and tennis should be obvious
Our Boys A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen by Joe Drape The Freshman Year (Scoring the Goal, #1) by Adam Van Dyck The Perfect Mile Three Athletes, One Goal, and Less Than Four Minutes to Achieve It by Neal Bascomb Sooley by John Grisham

REQUIRED: Include the book cover and indicate the sport represented in your post.

Option 2: Twins - I am lucky enough to have two sets of twins: identical guys and fraternal gals. So, they were all in high school at once.

Read a book with a main character who is a twin. This list might help, but the presence of a book on the list does not guarantee it fits the task: Twins Books.
Required: If the main character's twin status is not clearly mentioned in the book's description, provide a reference when you post.

Option 3: Vacations - Not only do we live in the Great Plains, many of our family vacations included camping in most of the U.S. other than the coasts. Many people consider all of these areas as “flyover states,” but there are so many fantastic places to see when you are actually driving!

Read a book where all the letters FLYOVER can be found in the Title/Subtitle and/or Author's name. Books with multiple authors may be used but only one author's name can supply the needed letters.
Required: If using a book with multiple authors, state which author you used when you post.

There is a baseball glove at the feet of the boy in the middle of the front row. I hope that is enough.

Thank you.

TraceyL | 1069 comments For Option 3, you said that multiple authors are ok. Do we have to choose one author to use the letters from, or can we use letters from multiple authors?

Thanks in advnace.

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments Would this work for twins (Option 2)? Friends With Boys

The book is about Maggie and her three brothers (including twins Lloyd and Zander) when Maggie starts attending a regular high school after being homeschooled for years.

That the boys are twins is specifically mentioned in several of the reviews.

Emily | 782 comments Weird question:

For Option 1, would this book work? They're obviously basketball players, but not actively playing basketball on the cover.

The Big Three Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and the Rebirth of the Boston Celtics by Michael Holley

Baseball was not in the list above, but we are considering that it should be. Let me get back to you.

Yes, they are obviously basketball players, in uniform.

Kim, we've decided to limit task 1 to the sports that are listed. That means for the equipment OR the participants. We'll work on the wording.

So, no, it won't work because baseball is not in the list.

message 15: by Zach (new)

Zach Fellows I've never read The Night Circus but saw it on the list for twins. Could anyone confirm, are the twins in the book main characters?

Choose one author, only, if you use that option ; specify which author when you post. We've clarified that in the Task.

Nine Perfect Strangers

There are multiple main characters but 3 are a mother, father and daughter. You find out early on that the daughter had a twin brother who is dead. Finding out what happened and dealing with it is one of the main threads of the book.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Does the twin sibling have to be alive?
In the Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons, the protagonist's twin brother died when they were 6.
Thanks

Definitely, yes. After having two sets of twins, I know they will always consider themselves twins (and I will), no matter what happens.

That is certainly the message conveyed in this series as well.

If the twin is not evident in the GR description, don't forget to include a reference.

It is on this year's booker longlist (i know that doesn't always sell it as a great read) and It is a big book but so far I am enjoying it. However it is not one that you will wizz through in a day.

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments I have an odd one. My f2f book club selection for this month ended up featuring twins, but it specifically is not mentioned in any book description. At the beginning of the book all you know is that the main character has a sister. A quarter of the way in, the sister arrives and is revealed to be an identical twin - which explains a major part of the plot. Can I just quote from the page where this is revealed?
(I am not naming the book on purpose.)

The task requires you to provide a reference when you post. A reference is an independent review (not yours), inside or outside of Goodreads, an article, or a website that establishes the twin aspect of the book for verification. You can use spoiler tags, if you wish. You can find out how to add them by clicking on the (some html is ok) link above the comment box.

Deedee | 2344 comments Please verify Once There Were Wolves for Option Two -- main character Inti has a twin sister Aggie.
Here's the publisher's blurb:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
Scroll down below the photo of the cover, where it says "Book Details", and the description says:
Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands.

I don't see any mention of actual "twins" on the GR page. The only thing I see is a mention of the Twins baseball team! And that doesn't fit the spirit of this task.

This one is on my TBR list, so I can't personally confirm one way or the other.

But if there are actual twins as main characters, simply add a link to that information when you post.

thanks I simply did not read that as a baseball team name at all. I read it as twin people playing baseball -

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments Ok i have Grin and Beard It

although the twin nature of the brothers is not mentioned in the GR blurb the first book in the series Truth or Beard does
"Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston"

message 40: by Kathy KS (last edited Oct 23, 2021 10:26PM) (new)

Kathy KS | 2381 comments It appears that Truth or Beard definitely fits this task. However, after skimming through some of the reviews of Grin and Beard It, neither of those twin brothers seem to be a "main character".

If you can find examples that show they are MCs in both books, then add the appropriate links in your post.

If not, then I'm sorry, this title may not fit.

Bea Oh, dear. I was going to read A Wicked Slice, which was the cover shown on the catalogue of the library for this task. However, when I put it on hold and received it...I got this one: A Wicked Slice. Still shows the golf course, but not golf equipment. Won't work, will it?

Could I substitute this one The Murder on the Links: A Hercule Poirot Mystery?

Kathy KS | 2381 comments Bea wrote: "Oh, dear. I was going to read A Wicked Slice, which was the cover shown on the catalogue of the library for this task. However, when I put it on hold and received it...I got this one:..."

The task says "Read a book with a cover showing either the sports equipment used in or someone participating in one of these 7 sports..." I'm going to say all of them would fulfill the spirit of this one.
The cover you have shows a green and the flag. The flag could definitely be considered "equipment" that is used to play golf. And I will say that most golfers have definitely spent time fishing balls out of the water hazards with another club while "participating".

Read and enjoy.

PS- As a retired librarian, I'm also well aware that many libraries sometimes add the wrong record in the catalog that doesn't actually match the book in hand. Makes it hard with this kind of task!
