aving returned to Chicago, young socialite Anna Nicholson can't seem to focus on her upcoming marriage. The new information she's learned about her birth mother continues to pull at her, and she hires Pinkerton detectives to help her find the truth. But as she meets people who once knew her mother and hears stories about the past, Anna soon discovers that some secrets are better left hidden.

At the same time, unflattering stories about Anna are leaked by someone who would love to see her disgraced and her engagement broken. And as Anna tries to share her faith with her society friends, she understands that her choice to seek God's purpose for her life isn't as simple as she had hoped.

When things are at their darkest, Anna knows she can turn to her grandmother, Geesje de Jonge, back in Holland, Michigan. Geesje's been helping new Dutch immigrants, including a teen with a haunted past, adjust to America. She only hopes that her wisdom can help all these young people through the turmoil they face.

Who's joining in this Group Buddy Read for September?

Christine | 42 comments I'm in! Once it's available from my library that is.

Lori (lorihayes-rich) | 9 comments I received a copy of this book at the end of August from Overdrive. Therefore, I finished it today and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I don't read a lot of romance, but this book has so much more!

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I’m slowly reading my print copy, it’s good so far!

Christine | 42 comments I just got my copy from the library, so will be starting it soon!
Edit: I feel bad, I may DNF this one as I'm finding the pace a bit too slow for me. Anna's a nice character, though.

Amanda (goodreadscomamanda_hamm) | 13 comments I'm only a few chapters in to this book. So far I'm not a fan of the present tense narration, but I'm hoping it will grow on me. I don't think I've read anything else by Lynn Austin. Does she always write in present tense?

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine | 42 comments Wonderland Creek is by her and it looks like it's in past tense.

message 8: by Beth (new)

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I don’t mind present tense, but I do think it makes it take a little longer to sink into the story.

In general, there have only been two Austin books that I didn’t feel had a slow start. Wonderland Creek and A Proper Pursuit, which remain my favorite of hers.

This one took me a while to get into, but I’m glad I stuck with it as I really enjoyed it.

I’ll be curious to know which storyline others found most compelling.

Linda Nielson | 132 comments I noticed that this is the 2nd in a series. Do you need to read the first one first?

message 10: by Beth (new)

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments It is! We read book one for a group read earlier this year.

Personally I’m glad I read them in order, but my mom read this one and enjoyed it a lot without having read the first one.

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I agree with you, Kim! I did enjoy book one a bit more than book two.

Christine | 549 comments I'm finishing it up now. I liked the first one better also. The plot was a little more interesting.
