Winner of our 3rd Quarterly Read Poll for 2021 is Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist, a vampire tales set in Sweden.

It is autumn 1981 when the inconceivable comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenage boy is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last—revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day.

But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door—a girl who has never seen a Rubik's Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night....

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Read this one not too long ago. It was good, 3 stars for me, but it didn't wow me or live up to the hype I heard about it. I hope y'all enjoy it, and I'll be curious to hear what you think.😊

BTW... the link above (Let the Right One In) doesn't go to the book. It goes to some Harry Potter news link.😉

StarMan (thestarman) | 1942 comments I hope to read this at some point. Have seen the movie versions (Swedish original, and American remake) -- both were good. Maybe the book is nicely dark and creepy ;p

Hannah | 42 comments I thought this book was incredibly well done. It's unique within the vampire genre--very grim and tense, with a skin crawling feel and more "shown" violence than I expected. The relationships within the book especially surprised me, both hopeful and disturbing. If you've seen the movies, the Swedish version stays more true to the tone of the novel I think, which is maybe to be expected. I'll add some trigger warnings here for the unexpected (not the obvious vampire violence) just in case: non-graphic sexual assault of a child and self-harm/physical mutilation.

I tried watching the movie available through Hoopla but didn’t get very far before giving up 😂
